Thank you! These posters claiming they don’t see racism, shifting blame, canceling, etc. within this thread have selective reading skills. |
+1. I didn’t even know where Loudon Cty was, but these comments are something else and reinforce the article’s description of the place. I’d never raise my black kids in a place like Leesburg. -VA native in NW DC |
My mouth actually dropped at one point when I saw someone say “mimis parents did a better job raising her than Jimmy’s.” And again when someone said in 2016 kids who were 15 had no idea they couldn’t say the N word. Old enough to drive but not old enough to listen to rap and still not say the N word because they’re white and know better. This thread is mind blowing but it does give context to the things I see around here and what my students say they experience in school. They have to go to school with all the kids the moms in this thread raised. |
LOL. Land of charter schools. Do you have your kid in some SE quadrant non charter public school? No one outside DC thinks DC is a model for a harmonious diverse living experience. At least Leesburg is pretty and safer. There are many transplants in NOVA including Leesburg too. It's not a closed society. Jimmy lived in a 1.3 million dollar home. His family had enough power if they wanted to use it in a constructive way. It's also only his word that the school didn't do anything. It was probably incidents like this one that were not directed at anyone that he blew out of proportion. Jimmy sounds like a kid that has had his fair share of throwing rocks himself if he saved this video for years to inflict harm. If this tik tok video were on school grounds, the most I would expect a school to do is email the family that their daughter shouldn't use that word on school grounds. This wasn't a hate incident. The school has larger issues to deal with. |
Also schools don't usually tell the person reporting an issue what they've done to deal with the issue. They usually deal with it in their own way and then might check back with the person reporting to see how things are going. They don't have an obligation to tell the person reporting how the matter was handled. So Jimmy could have been completely wrong on the fact that the school took any action if there was action to be taken.
Obama has a great video on why casting stones never really works in the long run to cause real change. It's possible the school did not do a good job about creating a safe space for all of the children there. It's hard to tell from this story alone because their point of view isn't recorded. But either way, this was the wrong way to go about dealing racial issues. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaHLd8de6nM |
It’s Loudoun, not Loudon, and no one really cares where you decide to raise your kids. That’s up to you. However, there are very few areas as economically segregated as NW DC, and it’s served by a public school system that makes no attempt even in 2020 to integrate the schools. People in Loudoun for the most part still have enough common sense to look at each situation on its merits, which is why they realize that an 18-year-old boy who intentionally tries to sabotage a classmate’s future over a crude and flippant (if exuberant) 3-second comment she’d made 3 years earlier is far more worthy of criticism than the classmate. If you have a hard time with that, please do stay the hell away. We’re more than happy for you to stay on the other side of the river. |
If the posters here are any indication of the true feelings of people in Loudoun County, I agree with the pp that I wouldn’t want to live there or visit.
-POC in PG county (so don’t condescend to me about DC) |
Yeah they’re basically “if you don’t support casually racist while kids you can stay over there!” I live in Loudoun and this thread is embaraasinnnggg but also sadly predictable |
PP here. There are parts of NW DC that are actually pretty integrated, and when it was time to buy, we intentionally chose one of these areas (note: not all of NW DC is west of Rock Creek Park). My kid plays with kids in the neighborhood from all different backgrounds. Wilson High School is also quite diverse. Back to my point, the posters here aren't doing Loudon Cty any favors with the general tone of the commentary here. The overwhelming support for the girl and lack of empathy for black students such as Jimmy in your schools is a shame, but not surprising given what I've heard about far out areas of NoVa. I'm sure there are progressive, open-minded folks in these areas too, but for the most part, they don't see to be commenting here. |
The vast majority of posters here have never been to Loudoun County except maybe to visit a winery. These are the true feelings of moneyed Arlingtonians, Bethesdans and Washingtonians with a few from Falls Church, Rockville, Old Town Alexandria mixed in. |
Some, sure. Enough to oust Barbara Comstock in favor of Jennifer Wexton and elect Juli Briskman of bike-rider-who-lost-job-for-flipping-off-Trump-motorcade fame. Enough to likely ensure Virginia remains at least purple if not outright blue for many elections to come. |
How do you see this as progressive? Even Obama would say Jimmy was being overly vindictive. This is the progressive society I want. I want one where we all work to lift each other up. This isn't how it's done. |
Sorry this isn't the progressive society I want. I want one that is actually inclusive and building each other up. Not just throwing rocks. |
Absolutely no one think this kid is a great humanitarian. But there are too many posters who want to crucify him and “forgive” the young lady when the truth is that both of them did something stupid and both of them have to deal with the consequences. It’s just shocking that no one seems to empathize with the circumstances of the young man and I’m not sure how the poster who insists that he lives in a 1.3 million dollar house knows where he lives. And as if being rich can somehow make hearing the n word feel less bad. Give me a break. |
Jimmy btw is NOT a black student. He's a mixed race student. |
