Taylor Swift is awful (and her music isn't even very good)

You’re the one who is nuts. Writing a few nasty comments about a public figure in a thread that’s supposed to be about how bad and overrated that celebrity is doesn’t qualify as stalker territory.

But you know what’s creepy? Being unable to let people who don’t like Taylor Swift discuss how overrated she is without having to step in and tell them they’re crazy, “unhinged stalkers.”

Hey, all you Swifties, go and start your own thread about how much you love her and how great she is.

Let us “haters” have are our space! It’s mind boggling that you’re all so obsessed that can’t tolerate the existence of a thread against her.
That’s cute. Shall we go find all these threads where Swifties are free to praise her without the haters popping in? Not one hater. Because they’re so respectful of those other threads. I’ll wait.

The way you express ideas in this post is a perfect example the mean girl problem of Swifties. You are not just disagreeing, you are being disrespectful. ‘that’s cute.” “I’ll wait.” “Shall we” Are just mean girl tactics meant to put down and gain power by infantilize the person you are arguing with. Why not make your point without using these tactics? Frankly, it brings down the discourse of women to say things like this especially when you claim Taylor is an example to girls and people “need to calm down.” On the internet.
Some quotes from this thread about Taylor: She’s ugly, her eggs are drying up, looks like a hyena, a symptom of crumbling society, disgusting, puts on a sleazy strip show, trash. Who’s being the mean girls here? I’m happy to hear how those comments contribute to a healthy discourse of women.

None of those comments were in the post you were responding to.
I would argue that saying her eggs are drying up is probably true as I myself had a geriatric pregnancy at 36. She is pretty close to that and if she wants kids it is a reality she will have to deal with. Also it is a point of conversation that she is a symbol of over capitalism. So yes in some ways those can further discussion among women. People can think about freezing their own eggs and the fair trade/environmental impact of all those jet rides, plastic bracelets and memorabilia Taylor’s summer tour generated.

As far as the ugly comments they are plain old
mean. They do not however attack someone who is posting on this board or attack someone for expressing an opinion. The swifties mean girl
Comments are designed to stop negative discourse about her and shame (not a huge celebrity that will never see the comments) but each individual reporter and poster who gives Taylor negative press. That is a bigger issue because she has her own little censorship police.
Here is an article about one reporters experience:

I can’t believe you are saying that describing a woman as having dried up eggs is not misogynistic and incredibly rude. I am 47… No doubt my eggs are dried up, but there are other interesting things about me and I’m not defined by fertility. to define women only by their fertility and acting as if when those years are over, and at 34 years are not over for her anyway, means they are dried up or somehow deficient is incredibly misogynistic. Women are more than their ability to produce eggs.

She needs to write at least one really good iconic song that has such good melody and pace that almost everybody knows it. Like Dollys “I will always love you” or Deloris O’Riordens “Linger”,Blondies “Rapture” or Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven is a place on Earth”

She has a lot of good songs but no really great iconic song with a really smart melody.

She might be too old to write one. Most musical artists greatest works usually wrap up around 30 or younger.

Fortunately, for her, she has a ton of iconic songs.

I’m an old lady who isn’t a pop music fan, but doesn’t her Romeo and Juliet song fit this bill? Even I know that song. It’s catchy.

Whitney made Dolly’s song iconic.

Heaven is a Place on Earth is a legit iconic song. Huge hit that transcends time. Everyone recognizes it…including little kids today.

I’m Gen X and love Linger and Rapture, but those songs aren’t universally recognized.

Taylor needs her songs to be used in movies in order to make them universally recognized and timeless.

NP.
Belinda was not the writer of "Heaven Is a Pkace on Earth."

It's arguable that Love Story is that iconic song for Taylor so far. She was the writer.

Ha, I am the original OP of this thread.

I will say that since I posted this thread originally, I have mellowed somewhat on Swift as a public figure. I still think she's a game player when it comes to her public persona, and that it's mostly about getting her large fan base to over-identify with her personally as a ploy to deflect any criticism against her (and the fact that this works IS annoying because I think we should be allowed to criticize public figures for things like private jet use, manipulative media tactics, etc.). However I guess I just care less about her than I used to because this doesn't actively irk me as it did when I started this thread.

I've also come to like one Taylor Swift song -- Anti-hero. It's funny and clever. Though if I think about it too hard, it still annoys me in the way a lot of Swift's public persona annoys me, because if you view it solely as a song about Taylor Swift, it's once again selling you on the idea that she's an underdog when she is obviously anything but. But if I listen to it just as a pop song with relatable lyrics, I like it.

I continue to feel that her catalogue, while extensive, is pretty mediocre, and that a handful of clever turns of phrase in her lyrics don't make up for a lot of forgettable songs that just do not stand up against other great song writers and performers.

I doubt that will satisfy the crazed Swifties who almost certainly will come here to tell me how wrong I am even though I'm saying I don't really hate her anymore. If I titled this thread today, it would be "Taylor Swift is awful (and her music is mostly only okay with a few minor exceptions). Happy?

I do CycleBar for exercise and made the mistake of going to a Taylor Swift theme ride. Worst ride ever. I didn’t know who she was or what she looked like before, I just always go on a schedule. Anyway, it turns out I hate her music, too. I wanted to leave early. I know I’ll be dating myself, but I like Britney much better and she’s so much prettier, too. And Christina has a much better voice. Lady Gaga is better, too.

I don’t get the massive popularity of Taylor. Maybe it’s because she’s ordinary and people don’t feel threatened? They identify with her or something? I don’t get it.

She connects with girls and young women. She’s a genius businesswoman. I don’t know many of her songs and I’m far from a swiftie but I mad respect for her as a person, an artist, and a businesswoman.

If you can respect her after the type of music she makes, you are a Swiftie.

NP. I’m 49 and have sons. I’ve never been into her or known much about her, but on Saturday I downloaded Folklore for kicks. I was thrilled to discover the album includes “Exile,” which I have lived because of Bon Iver, and I was very pleasantly surprised that I really liked most of the rest of the songs on the album. Who knows, I might download Midnights this weekend because I also love Anti-Hero. I guess I’m a new Swiftie!

To all the haters: You don't have to love her but, please admit that she is very successful, she is world wide famous. Would you attack a white man like you all do Taylor? No. Just because it isn't for you does not mean that your opinion counts.

Because it does not.

If you don't have a great voice that's going to be obvious. Even great singers can sound meh at the superbowl. She just has an ok voice.

Let's hear you
