I know this is minor, but isn't the big new house being built on the same piece of land as the old cabin? If so then why can’t the old cabin be the guest house for the home health team?

Previous episodes have shown Rebecca trying to control Kate's diet, which was both awful and realistic. I loved seeing Kate stand up for herself and her determination to break the food-policing cycle, and it made me cringe to see Toby acknowledge genetics and to say "People are horrible to fat kids, and the solution is not to get fat, despite genetics." Yeah, Toby, and the solution to depression is to buck up and look on the bright side.

Or, you know, you could be supportive of people and treat everyone as having value.

Really disliking Toby, maybe for the first time.

Toby made serious lifestyle changes, focused on healthy diet and exercise, to lose a significant amount of weight. I think it's reasonable for him to suggest attention to diet and exercise would be beneficial for the kids, as someone who's been on both sides. Kate may have been dealt a worse genetic hand, but she doesn't seem particularly attentive to diet and exercise concerns.

I've never liked Toby-- too much over-the-top, super hero Jack energy for my liking. That was probably what drew Kate to him. I love Kate's character development and was thrilled Rebecca picked her as the understudy to Miguel's role as captain. Their tightening relationship the last two seasons has been great.

The distance relationship while parenting dynamic hits close to home. The show nailed it so well. The sensitivity/guilt of the absent parent combined with disruption or questioning of parenting routines is really, really tough.

The best part of the episode was the Miguel/Rebecca backstory. I think we could all surmise that Miguel had fallen in love with Rebecca and chose to distance himself as a result. The fact that Rebecca was so devastated by that was a wonderful surprise.

And finally, what the heck is a sugar pie??? A flan, a tarte, a cheesecake, what? And what is the secret ingredient? FTR, my guess is almond extract.

What drives me crazy is that it's all self inflicted! Could Toby really not find a fulfilling job in LA? We know they can live off one income, so it's not like they NEED to live with this arrangement.

As someone who is living a version of this right now, it's complicated. BUT I find it surprising that Kate and Toby are at this point right now and with their backgrounds. My spouse and I have been separated by work before because it was part of the life and career we chose with the USG. This time it's more of a choice and believe me, there has been A LOT of tension and stress about it, but I think we've more or less made peace.

And our kids are much older. But yes, the whole spouse coming "home" and questioning routines is tough, especially at a time in the evolution of their family where you are figuring out what your parenting style is.

I love Beth! She has been around the Pearsons for SO long - nobody knows their idiosyncrasies or quirks better. No wonder she has the best one-liners.

Mandy Moore was terrific in this episode - she plays all the "decades" so well. It is hard to believe that she is the youngest member of the adult cast.

And I really liked the back story between Rebecca and Miguel.

So are Rebecca and Miguel loaded, or are they expecting Kevin to pay for this round the clock home health care? It's incredibly expensive. Especially if they are essentially getting 3+ live-in people to work in shifts.

Rebecca and Miguel are well off and Kevin is also financially very well off. As is Randall. Kate is the only sibling that isn't.

+1 When I see her I feel sad. She seems like a lovely person, with an unnecessarily shortened life expectancy.

The actress has tried, and did lose 100 pounds not long ago, but I'm sure the pandemic has been tough in that regard.

You'd be surprised how cheap in-home healthcare can be in rural areas without a lot of good jobs. My friend's mom had dementia and it was much cheaper to hire home aids in NC than to put her in assisted living. Especially if Miguel is also going to be there so they don't necessarily need 24 hour care.

Oooh, good point. I forgot they kinda left that hanging out there. I’m not a fan that they just left that whole situation unresolved and it hasn’t been mentioned in a few episodes. I know it’ll get resolved eventually but I want to see how Beth and Randall are handling it.

I like Elijah for Madison, very much. I do agree she should have sucked it up for the Pearson Thanksgiving though, given Rebecca's situation and the fact that it is very premature to insist on celebrating it with Elijah.

As much as I like the character, I had mixed feelings about Beth's storyline. 95% of people who aim for careers in the performing arts don't succeed, just the way that it is. Disappointing, yes, but I don't feel the teacher was some kind of a monster. You'd think as an adult she'd be much more understanding of the fact that she didn't have "it" and so objectively lost out to a better dancer for one show. ONE SHOW. She didn't have to give up based on one disappointment, she chose to and it was very immature.

Just catching up ... I agree with this. I LOVE Beth, but the episode could have benefited from some subtle edits. A little acknowledgment that hardly anyone "makes it" as a dancer; a more believable problem than bad pirouettes; a dance student whose father wasn't a lawyer. It was good, but the little problems with this show keep it from being great.
