It was such a vivid memory for me. I was home sick from middle school and was watching it by myself in the living room. It was so shocking. Of course, no parent had a heart to heart with me about it.

I had the same reaction to the episode--I was probably in 3rd or 4th grade and I remember it well but I don't remember it affecting me in the way that it was portrayed on the show. I mean, I probably reacted more like Kevin than like Randall or Kate and my parents were never concerned about it. It was sad for sure but we didn't have a big discussion about it at the dinner table.

It affected me because of Christa McAullife. I was in elementary school and they built up the whole “teacher in space” thing in the media and at my school. If it hadn’t been for that I don’t think little kids would’ve been impacted as much. I remember being really sad about her.

We didn't watch it live - I was in 8th grade - but maybe the teachers did. I remember our science teacher leaving and then coming back into the classroom crying.

At the time I recorded (on VHS) three hours of NBC soaps. So when I went home I had three hours of video of the disaster. I remember it being incredibly sad, but not really life-affecting. A friend's father knew Ellison Onizuka well. I remember her talking about his grief - he shut himself away for a day or two, which was inconceivable to me - a parent not being available at all.

If this didn’t hit you personally in some way, consider yourself fortunate. Be grateful.

this got to me more so than the challenger because it was more personal. but both very powerful triggers to me.

I'm the PP who was a middle schooler home sick that day. Yes, that was exactly why it was so shocking. We had heard so much in school about the teacher in space and I can still see Christa McAulliffe's face in my mind.

I was in high school when the Challenger tragedy happened and one of the science teachers at my school was a runner-up for the spot McAullife got. We were all watching that day, excited about the connection to our school. It was terrible to see it all unfold.

I wonder if we went to the same high school. I was in 10th grade (home sick that day) so didn't watch it there, but we too had a runner-up for Teacher in Space on our faculty. I had her for a teacher two years later and she talked about Christa a lot.

One of my best friend's dads was a runner-up as well (but I didn't meet her until 5 years after it happened). She had a patch that NASA gave him sewed to her backpack when we were in high school.

It was cruel.

Did that break-up scene seem fake to anyone else? Like it was some type of act between those two? My guess is that there is more behind that break-up scene. Like he staged it because he wanted Kate to overhear that breakup conversation.

DP. I'm thinking the idea was to imply that that he does not find Kate boring.

but it WAS cruel. A mature man says, this is not working for me.
He's a low class idiot.

Maybe! I went to high school in eastern Baltimore County in MD.

Which is kind of amazing as she is by far the dullest character on the show. Other than maybe Madison but even she’s coming into her own.
