Don’t be so optimistic. About 10-15% of those who get the virus are said to need intensive medical care and ventilators to breathe. Our hospitals will exceed capacity. We aren’t prepared to have thousands of patients on ventilators for weeks. If we don’t have the ventilators now, we won’t when this thing is in full swing in the US.

Well, old numbers, but we have about 150,000 ventilators. Not saying the hospital staff or other aspects of hospitals could support it, but at least we’ve got 150k ventilators.

This makes 7 cases imported from Iran since Thursday--Canada and Lebanon each have had a case and the UAE has two.

The coronavirus is now present in 35 countries and territories.

Iraq and Afghanistan also have the first cases, both Iran related.

Number of countries now up to 37.

The Red Cross has been granted an exemption to provide humanitarian aid to North Korea according to BNO twitter.

North Korea has denied having any cases but there were reports early one that the virus had made its way there from China. Earlier today, news outlets reported that foreign diplomats had been put under quaranatine.

Couldn't get that link to work, but the Guardian is reporting on this.

The minister of health claims there are 66 cases and 12 deaths, while a member of parliament called him a liar, claiming that there have been 50 deaths in the city of Qom alone.

According to this there are about 20 full feature ventilators per 100,000 people, roughly double that including non-full feature ventilators.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21149215

About 5 percent of those infected require mechanical ventilation.

If this infects anything more than 1 percent of the population, we are going to run out of ventilation capacity.

If half the population get infected, which experts think is very possible, then less than one in 50 may get access to the ventilation they require.

Yikes, that seems like a lot in a short period of time.

Lots of elderly smokers there?

Of just over 200 cases in Italy — 100 hospitalizations?? That suggests it’s not mild for most.

Pp here, but I guess I didn’t make my point strong enough - I don’t think the number of ventilators is going to be the issue at hospitals, it will be the extreme pressure on hospital that will be the issue (staff, isolation units, duration of cases, etc).

Please don’t take this as arguing with you, I just think ventilators is one of many issues.

Probably one month, but that’s eating a lot of pasta/soup. I will buy extra frozen veggies but mostly shelf stable.

My theory is, because it’s so contagious, the reported numbers of infected are very low and show only those who are so ill they seek out medical care. I think it’s 200 went to the doctor, 100 hospitalized, but thousands infected with “colds” or totally asymptomatic.
