In hindsight the ceremony really needed to have been redesigned from the ground up to integrate all the accommodations required to allow this gentleman to attend without issue. Logistically that was probably impossible since this awards have been going on fir decades and likely has a cookie cutter plan in place year on year and nobody realised something had to change this year until it was too late. As an executive producer for I swear he had every right to be there, the movie was up for multiple awards. He wasn’t just a guest who should just be grateful to be invited. Executive producers literally accept the best picture prize and give the acceptance speech. |

It’s a shame for Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo. The flew overseas to attend a professional event where their work was nominated. They were asked by the organizers to present an award, only to face racial slurs when appearing on stage. You could see the hurt on their faces after the n word was yelled at them. The organizers of the event did nothing to apologize to them. The host issued a throwaway apology “IF you were offended.”
It has to be humiliating for them. The broadcasters had two hours to remove the racial slur before the event was televised, but did nothing. That movement will forever be on the internet. The man who used the slur has issued nothing but a series of self-serving statements to promote his movie. People are making a bunch of excuses for him and behaving as if he is the victim. I’m not sure he’s not racist. He yells generic profanity at white people, yet yells the n word as soon as he sees a black person - he yelled the same slur at the Sinners production designer upon seeing her at the dinner. It’s shameful that he has not apologized for the hurt he has caused. |
You are so shockingly unaware of how his condition works and yet the internet gives you a place to spew your nonsense for free. Enjoy your stupidity I guess. |
Why does he yell common swear words at white people yet yell racial slurs at black people? The N word is way more offensive than telling people to F off. He yelled this slur at two black men on stage and a black woman production designer trying to enjoy the dinner after the show. |
DP - your comment seems to be alluding to this idea that his intent with Black people is actually malicious compared to white people, and I disagree -- his condition means he doesn't intend anything malicious at all. that said, i do think you make a good observation about the difference in his swear words, because i do think it makes a different in terms of *impact* (i'm sure you all are tired of seeing the word "intent" and "impact," but i couldn't think of another way to word it.). if someone tells you to eff off, it's so much easier to not take it personally. the n-word is such an evil nasty term that you shouldn't expect Black people to brush it off in the way you'd expect non-Black people to brush off generic curse words. |
Agreed. |

I mean, the person has a disease that prompted the outburst.
While the outburst included hurtful racial slurs, the reality is there was no malicious intent. A host should have quickly stepped in to explain what was happening. “Pardon me, but I must explain what just happened. Some of you might not be aware that Joe (whatever his name is) has TS—a condition that blah blah blah.” Use it as an educational experience, clarify there was no racial intent, and ideally sum up with a statement about how far we’ve come that a person with TS is at the event, etc. I mean, don’t people know anyone with mental health issues, dementia, mental handicaps? Etc? People say things that you need to let roll off your back by reminding yourself of their very real condition/issues. |

Please stop telling black people that they have to just accept being called the n word ! Intent isn’t all that matters. One marginalised community should not have their dignity stripped to maintain another’s. Come on all DEI consultants out there. This is your moment of glory. Come up with win win solutions to this cluster f***. I swear opens in America in two months and it’s lead actor is already in 2027 Oscar contention after winning BAFTA. That’s going to be a long year of press which Davidson is very likely going to be involved in. |
This really nothing you can yell at white people that would have them freak out. Davidson can try, but it just wouldn't have the same impact. |

One time I was walking down Michigan Ave in Chicago with my family and an obviously mentally ill homeless person screamed at nobody in particular, “White people are uglier than dog$h!t!”
It was equal parts sad and funny. After we passed, I explained to my kids that the person was suffering from severe mental health issues and was homeless, etc. With the proper context, anyone can understand. I think it’s baffling to be upset with a person with TS for anything that comes out of their mouth once you understand how their condition works. |

The idea of “intent” is interesting here. If he had some involuntary tic that he indiscriminately shouted - something like “ah! or “moo!” - at anyone at any time, that seems like there’s no intent - it’s automatic and random.
But here, his brain IS processing. His brain is assessing the situation and finding the most offensive slur for a particular person. Even if he cannot control the actual muscles in his mouth to keep it in, it does seem like there’s intent on the part of his brain. |
And going further, I’m surprised the neurological / medical community have not developed treatments or drugs for this condition. It seems like people are saying, “eh, this is how he is, you just have to sit back and take it and no, he doesn’t need to apologize.” But… we still want to live in a civilized society. Every day, people with disabilities treat / manage their conditions. I don’t know why this would be any different. |
And it’s baffling to not understand that when your behavior negatively impacts other people, the onus is on you to apologize and to do what you can to make amends. Unlike the person in your example, Mr Davidson is clearly capable of making an apology, and of understanding the weight of his comments. So, in this case, the context makes his failure to apologize seem even worse. |
| Why hasn't Prince William, who's BAFTA president, issued a statement yet? Yes, the BAFTAs as an org issued a statement that left everyone unhappy. But their president should be on this, no? |
