True. I think a lot of the reaction is BBC's actions what they chose to edit out versus air. They could have a should have censored that the same way they censored other things. They should apologize as well |
He stepped out after he yelled 9 swears/slurs, including homophobic. Not soon enough. |
Disagree. Why does he have to apologize for you to take the condition seriously? There is an entire movie about his condition! How about those who are offended take the time to watch the movie and learn? |
No, they shouldn't have censored what he said. The whole point of his being there is for people to learn about this condition and make it so people with his condition can be in public spaces without people freaking out about it. They also shouldn't have censored "Free Palestine" but at least one could argue that the event wasn't about Palestine. |
This has been said multiple times, but I’ll try again. It is possible to both take his condition seriously AND expect that apologies are warranted for behavior that negatively impacts other people. Peace out. But keep in mind that people who don’t apologize or take responsibility for their behavior will then have to deal with the consequences of said behavior. |
DP, but he's bringing majorly bad publicity to people with tourettes. He should apologize and start reshaping the narrative. His refusal (I mean he did apologize but it was a huge nothing burger) just hurts other people with tourettes who will now face the backlash because of him. |
Yeah, this controversy isn't helping tourettes advocacy, it's just making me think they're super annoying. |
It's really unfortunate. He wants to be a role model and activist, but it's doing quite the opposite. |
Having a condition doesn't mean you can be absolved of abusive behavior |
I don't think he wants that. I think he wants to be able to say hurtful things and then say you can't be hurt by that it's not my fault I'm disabled and if you're hurt or say I should apologize you're an ableist bigot. |
Exactly. |
It’s your unprofessional opinion that he wants to do these things. Others say it’s involuntary. But he does do these things and he’s not apologetic about it. |
1. I do take the condition seriously. 2. His behavior is just reinforcing the idea that people with Tourettes just use the condition to be aholes. 3. You aren't a hole for having a disability. 4. You are an ahole when you do something hurtful to others and use your disability to excuse yourself from apologizing for the hurt 5. Really this is about you feeling that gay people and black people are too easily offended and they should just get over it |
If he didn't want to do these things he would apologize sincerely otherwise it seems like he likes to get to use abusive language and claim disability afterwards. |
He stepped out at some point but not immediately after shouting the N word. He also then attended the dinner after where he called the Sinners costume director the N word. So let’s not pretend he realized he crossed a line. |
