Friday's "snow?"

No. We are open today because they want to have the state championship football game go on.

Plenty of people on here complaining they should have opened childcare on Tuesday while also raging about dangerous roads this morning.

Yes, I am one of those people (despite not needing childcare). Because childcare is a necessity for workers, and parents take their own responsibility for driving their kids to childcare. Schools, on the other hand, have a greater responsibility towards the safety and wellbeing of their more numerous students and staff. It would have been great to open on time today WITH MORE PREP on the roads. That's the ideal solution. Failing that, a delay would have been wise, with open childcare, so that traffic is a little staggered and therefore SAFER.

But perhaps your little brain is incapable of grasping such a nuanced viewpoint.

Taylor is *new* around here. He should have followed PG county example or at the very least Howard county.

Opening on time was stupid.

Full day and Friday rush hour traffic when it gets dark at 4:45 is worrying.

A lot of bus drivers are older people, I'm concerned their reaction times and eyesight isn't the best.

This thread is hilarious. How some of you people manage to get out of bed and dressed every morning is beyond me.

Do you think a 2 hour delay would have been better? Lot more snow now.

1. MCPS should have kept childcare open on Tuesday.

2. MCPS should either have delayed opening today, or organized better brining around the schools for this morning's on time opening. The cars slipping around my kids' high school was quite something this morning, in the dark. A delay this morning would have meant more snow to contend with, but also more time for trucks to salt, and at the very least, it means maneuvering in daylight! Which for high schoolers driving themselves to school is NOT NEGLIGIBLE.

That you think that MCPS should delay because a small fraction of MCPS students have their own transport and opt to drive themselves to school in the snow is incredibly selfish. Your new driver shouldn’t be driving to school if you aren’t confident in their ability to navigate inclement weather. Tell them to take the school bus or walk rather than endangering others with their inexperience.

Yes - because _childcare_ is optional for children to attend. And does not require buses. The childcare providers can decide for themselves whether to open based on the location. MCPS does not need to intervene. A two hour delay is not a judgment that _no one_ can safely drive _anywhere_. It’s an acknowledgment that _some_ in the county can’t safely get to school, generally because of bus issues. It says a lot that some schools told parents it’s OK to be late today; they are essentially saying MCPS is wrong and I hope they don’t get in trouble for doing it.

pm

My kid’s school bus has broken down twice on in the last 12 months stranding the kids on a road. That it happened during a minor snow event just means that the kids are colder while waiting…

We drove her to school this morning, but I am here to tell you that most parents of high schoolers can't wait for their kids to drive, because it's a huge relief on the household. Don't put this all on the parents. The community needs to react correctly to weather events, and in previous years, such a snowfall would have triggered at least a delay.

Uhh, that's pretty embarrassing. They didn't recognize any landmarks? I think that was a parody.

What? I don't understand.

I don't understand how anyone neurotypical could get lost simply due to not seeing the sidewalk. Are they trained to follow a painted line?

Don’t use clinical language in colloquial conversations. Just say “normal.”

Pray tell, what is the definition of “normal?” And can you point us to the rule that polices our language such that we can’t use words that may occur in a clinical setting?

Normal is an adjective. It means conforming to the standard, typical, expected behavior. I'm surprised you needed this defined for you. Are you dumb?

There's no "rule." Rather, you just sound really stupid using clinical terminology outside of a clinical setting.

Are you really this stupid? Or are you being deliberately obtuse? And if the latter, for what purpose?

I come from northern Europe, I've driven in far worse. But the expectation around here is that if you open schools, you'd better damn well make sure that the streets are safe around them!

The preparation for a Code Green today was lacking. In previous years, if MCPS and the county could not prepare in time, it meant a closure. I, OTOH, would prefer they prepare better.

As for the childcare closure on Tuesday, that was just bonkers.

School will be extended until July if the expectation this winter is that streets are completely clear before school opens. Of course, half of the kids won't show up.

A lot of these parents would be fine with that as they see school as day care.

Lots more time to put down sand and ice. Our staff was doing it as kids were arriving. It was a mess.

I don’t think he can call an early dismissal. He has some damaged buses and ones that were stuck. I bet he doesn’t have enough buses working to start the high school routes in an hour.

No, parents on DCUM have already booked summer camps and will send their kids if they can't get their money back.

And yes, school functions as child care for many parents. Parents are required by law to send our kids to school or get approved for homeschool. Most parents don't wait around at home in case school gets cancelled. We have jobs that get disrupted when school is closed.
