This is a classic tactic: they bring him in on a lesser charge so that he is not a flight risk. If they forced him to commit a crime of wreckless driving, however, I would think that would be considered entrapment. |
That is incredibly stupid (of them). |
It was incredibly stupid of him to react to their following him. Now they can bring him on a charge of reckless driving. |
I'm a bit confused on how this all went down. If they let him leave the police station, why did they then follow him in his car? What a mess. And meanwhile, all the attention is focused on this one person. |
The Charlottesville police let him leave their police station. It was VA state and federal officers, not the Charlottesville police, who followed him in his car. |
You have no idea what you are talking about here. It is not entrapment. he was not forced to drive recklessly. Entrapment would be an undercover police officer saying "hello law-abiding citizen. I will pay you X amount of money to drive really fast. No one will know." Wink Wink. It is NOT entrapment to follow someone, for whatever reason, and he starts driving recklessly. Not even close. And it was responsible policing for them to stop chasing when it became dangerous. There have been some terrible tragedies around the country with police engaging in high speed chases. I'm not commenting on the rest of the investigation, just that this was the right call. And I suspect they had no idea he would take off like that since a person walking into a police station (which he didn't have to do) and asking for a lawyer does not seem like a person who is a flight risk. And, frankly, if he was driving dangerously and really fast he should be arrested. Someone could have been killed. And now that he seems to have demonstrated that he's a flight risk, if they do arrest him they'll have a strong argument for no bail. That would not have been the case if he had not run because a man who voluntarily shows up at the police station does not seem like a flight risk. Its very odd, actually. |
cops can be such assholes that I wouldn't be surprised if this happened. at least they didn't shoot him dead with a toddler in the car. |
They couldn't hold him, they did not have the basis to arrest him so he was free to go. But it makes sense that they would follow him since he is a suspect. |
the police were probably jerks to him when he was trying to help so he left pissed. enter more cops on his tail - I really don't blame him entirely for going 15 mph over the limit. |
Yup. Sometimes they issue an arrest warrant for unpaid parking tickets or missed court dates just so they have the suspect in custody while they gather more evidence for their main investigation. |
This would be my guess as well. But he should have kept his cool. |
just like Law & Order LOL! |
yup I can see myself ripping out of the parking lot so good thing I'm not being questioned by police now. It would not end well. |
First of all the police did not "bring him in on a lesser charge." The lesser charge happened AFTER he was in, and he brought himself in.
Second he did not just rip out of a parking lot. And he didn't just go over the 15 mph speed limit. Because obviously the police could have pulled him over if that was the case. What happened was he drove off very, very fast, so fast that the police decided it was too dangerous to follow. We have no idea if the police were jerks to him or not, thats just speculation. But he wasn't "trying to help." He went into the station to ask for a lawyer. As a lawyer, I think that was the right thing for him to do. But he clearly did not go in there to talk to the police or help them in any way. Some of you are fudging the facts to try to show this guy is innocent. We have no idea if he was innocent or guilty. But the facts are the facts. |
Just a few months back, a UVa student was charged with three felonies...she panicked in a dark parking lot when a swarm of ABC liquor control officers descended upon her unannounced. They mistook her 12-pack of water for a 12-pack of beer. She panicked and tried to flee the scene. She was arrested and thrown in jail overnight. The charges were recently dropped in court. |
