The difference this time around--and what concerns people in the military establishment and others--is that Hedgseth is not only much less qualified (lack of commanding experience aside, he doesn't have much managerial experience) but seems to have been chosen primarily because he will do whatever Trump tells him and he does a good job on TV. This time around, Trump has been very deliberate about choosing "yes men" (and women) who are loyal to him rather than to the country. The first time around he selected more conventional appointees that were recommended to him by the GOP establishment.

Hegseth was flagged as an "insider threat" by the National Guard and wasn't allowed to work at the 2021 inauguration because he has the same tattoo as white supremacists - "Deus Vult"

Most of the people in gitmo didn’t commit crimes. 86% weren’t even captured by US forces. Most detainees were sold to the US for enormous bounties. The US flew planes over parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan offering $5,000 for any “suspicious person.” This amounted to approximately seven years’ average salary for most people in the area, encouraging them to turn over innocent men in exchange for a life-changing amount of money. Terrorists in the taliban actually called the tipster line as well to report people and were even paid by the US. As early as 2002, Guantanamo’s operational commander complained that he was being sent too many “mickey mouse” detainees. Soft spoken mousy guys not hardened terrorists/militants.

I don’t think Trump will last long with Pete. Trump went through two Sec of Defense in four years. Of all the departments, it seems military is the one he has the largest battle with and it’s probably because he calls them stupid or their rules of engagement stupid.

Obama went through four Secs. Def. Robert Gates, Leon Panetta, Chuck Hagel, and Ash Carter.
