I saw on the FCPS website - it just said it was revamped this last March with “updated curriculum.” |
The short answer is because my child is a very slow worker (has a 504 and requires extra time on exams.) Most likely he wouldn’t finish in the advisory period and it would take away time from other more important classes. It just adds one more thing to do. My child is also the type that would want to study for the test and over prepare. He wouldn’t want to take it cold right after a vacation. It just seems like a waste of time if it’s not required? |
Well I already validated that your kid doesn’t have to take the test anyway so it’s moot point to continue be on with a it’s a waste of time blah blah blah. My child has a 504, she obsesses over things, I’d still make her take it anyway because at the end of the day she doesn’t end up worst off only the same or better off. But plenty of kids in my experience were like yours and didn’t take it and they graduated just fine. Good luck to yall |
The Self-Directed Economics and Personal Finance course was updated on March 21, 2025. The new course features include: updated curriculum interactive modules homework assignments exit slip quizzes modules tests final assessment I mean that’s what it said before March 21. Revamp would be good but it still has to be completable for the TJ kids in 24 hours or less or they won’t all sign up for it! Have you actually seen these time locked and forced watch and listen podcasts and videos? If not I’d take that with a grain of salt besides how do we get around digital professional development at work? We turn it on play it in the background then go answer the questions and move on. No one actually seriously pays attention to those and everyone knows how to work around their inconvenience. And kids will figure out if they are time and force watch locked…play in background and do tickets when done. Sure takes extra time but not that much time Frankly it’s a thing I would’ve like 5-7 years ago but program coordinator was like it’s not worth the blowback from the sped/esol parents about how it’s “not fair.” And the regular parents being like it’s self directed my baby should be able to work and finish whenever they want! |
| DS is taking it right now, said the class is ridiculously easy, and that he doesn't understand how people can possibly fail it. It's day 2, he is already on Module 5. |
No one is worried about failing the course. We have been talking about the WISE test which is optional after the course is completed. |
He’s not really reading it or paying attention to the information then. |
| How about Wise for IB diploma? Rqd? |
The information is boring, the content is outdated. A book such as Personal Finance 101 will be better than this so-called course. I can't believe they teach this material for the entire year. The course has to be re-written. |
It is boring to just stare at a screen and read and listen to the videos. It’s like virtual learning all over again. But it’s a graduation requirement. At least it’s over quickly. They really should do away with this. |
Self directed epf or the epf grad requirement If you don’t like the grad requirement you need to call the va general assembly since they passed a law making it mandatory I love people being like dis dumb but not having any understanding of where things came from Also eliminating epf grad requirement would be stupid since 34 of 50 states require it for graduation Why do you suppose that is that nearly 70% of the us requires students take a course in personal finance. Could it possibly be because most kids actually need more insight beyond jimmy you don’t get an allowance but you have 100k debt now but you’ll be okay. Trust me not every kids parent has the finance talk with their kid even wealthy people. I once had a very well off student tell me his parents told him the family budget was none of his business. And then I had a middle class kid whose parents struggled but it was because they sacrificed some financial security to live in the more affluent area so he could attend the school. Something he had no idea but helped him to be more mindful of how his family spent money and also how sometimes he could just be like you know I don’t really need to ask my folks for that |
Oh as a former facilitator, it’s because those kids that fail self directed are lazy and just put it off. But what happens is they just get transferred to school year session after not finishing summer version and basically get another 9 months. I hated that we did that but then parents would be like but it’s not Jenny’s fault even though you emailed me every week, every day for the last two weeks, called me every day for the last week of the course. When kids failed with me, it was on them and parents, I was pretty hands off until the last two weeks. If you were not on pace, I was emailing the same message every freaking day. Always ended email with “if you want these emails to stop, finish the course!” Every parent I called or emailed always appreciated how much notice they were getting from me. There kid failing they would tell me was on their kid (which I agreed because I knew that parent was reminding their kid) |
Which is how 70% of kids doing self directed epf over the last decade have approached the course. Sorry but this persons kid is just treating it like everyone else has before, clicking to check a box. I always wished kids would take more away but they don’t and begrudging them for doing exactly what an adult faced this the same situation is silly. |
Same as AP or Honors courses. Take an IB class and pass, it covers industry credential requirement. |
| If my child takes the WISE test and fails, will colleges see that? |
