DCPS students shafted again - sign petition to keep Jelleff field public

It has been for ten years because of the Maret deal. Jelleff Boys & Girls has been waiting ten years to get permission to use that field after school for their kids who are all DC residents from all over the city. Are you really going to argue that these 100 kids should stand outside the fence and watch the private school kids play for the next ten years? Personally, I think Maret has had their time and it’s someone else’s turn.

That would require that Hardy + DCPS contract with DPR for a permit to use the fields. Have they done this? And has the BGC requested a permit (even one that starts at say 5 pm). Any reasonable person who has even a moderate handle on the facts in the case can see that the 10 year (well, 20 actually) deal with Maret is fraught with ethical dilemma. It was all done in secret. There needs to be an investigation, not only of the recent re-upping of the contract but how the original one 10 years ago came about. Do we really think that it's a coincidence that DC/DPR bought the property only to immediately lease it out to Maret. And yes, Maret put down a nice turf field and put up a nice fence, but they did that for....MARET. It was NOT a service project. And Maret benefited from it for a decade. The city is absolutely capable of taking the reigns and allowing children who are immediately in the vicinity (aftercare at Jelleff and Hardy for two) to use it when they NEED it. But go ahead, keep trying to justify something that is unjustifiable. This story is perfect for the likes of ProPublica and I'm going to encourage the to investigate.

So why haven’t they received a permit for when after Maret’s time expires? You’ll blame that on Maret too probably.

Don't be absurd. The field is large and with some basic scheduling (come on DPR, do your job) both PUBLIC groups can share the PUBLIC space. Maret can takes its "an hour MOST Wednesdays" and shove it. We won't miss Maret parents parking their huge SUVs along the parking lot sidewalk, blocking in cars that are parked legally.

Turtle Park (DPR) has a nice field. UDC has a nice soccer field. Both are closer to Maret than Jelleff.

Yes, that lone student on a scholarship at Maret certainly Trumps all the boys and girls who come from a similar backgrounds attending free Jeleff aftercare who are not getting a fancy private school education.
