As discussed above, they had a better army than it appears Russia is.

Correction to pp - Iraq had a better army than Ukraine and Russia.

It is like we are watching Blue jello wrestle a paraplegic. Ukraine had no intention of fighting, but was better prepared than 2014.

Ukraine does not have the cash for big weapon systems and obviously like 50% of Russias budget was embezzled.

Did Chechnya run out of assholes already?

Chechens who are battle-tested are dead or in Ukraine to fight Russia.

The Syrians they are sending are experienced killers.

This won’t end well at all. There are already calls on wahhabi chats to go fight in Ukraine to capture beautiful women. It’s amazing how undersexed this population is.

No. They can call all they want, people from the Middle East are NOT going to travel in great numbers to the north and the cold, to fight for a country they have no allegiance to. For the very few that do, they are fighting for money, not country, and that never produces particularly enthusiastic fighters. Also, and not to inject race into this, but if it comes to close combat, they'll be given short thrift indeed, because they will look different.

I am not worried about foreign mercenaries Russia scrounges from somewhere. I am worried about what Russia's incompetent and brutal war tactics does to civilians: indiscriminate bombardment and use of banned weapons will kill everyone on the ground. Mariupol is a death trap. People are dying of dehydration, cold exposure, lack of meds and untreated wounds. All of Ukraine's largest cities have the potential to be the next Mariupol.

And if Ukraine manages to push back the invaders, with unlimited weaponry from the West, then we need to fear that nuclear power plants in the hands of Russians will be sabotaged to leak across Ukraine and the West, as a parting scorched earth gesture from Putin.

In this context, a handful of fighters from the Middle East is negligible.

Negligible like half a million dead Iraqis who weren’t targeted but ended up dead regardless, go figure.

People fight differently when they fight for their homeland. The Russian soldiers don’t know what they are doing there and fight accordingly. Remember the only ppl in the Russian army are those with no better alternatives.

Come to think of it, not that different from here, it’s rare to see sons of Mc and umc in uniform.

Completely pointless remark.

There are no credible reports that any significant number of middle east mercenaries will fight in this conflict.

Not quite the same. Russia has conscription. Everyone has to do 2 years.

Clearly you are not from the dc area. Definitely officers come from money and tradition; enlisted does vary to middle income and below.

Ukraine is going to put up a hell of a fight as they have been. From a military analysis perspective I am sure the US feels good.

US needs more drones, about 1 trillion more in missile defense then engage Russia head on with no nuclear concerns.

+1
Anyone who can avoid the army does so. My coworkers have spoken of arranging for fake medical papers to get their younger family members back home out of having to sever.

Russians announced they will heavily attack all arms shipment. The window for sending in arms has closed or closing.

It’s an empty threat. The Russians have no capability to strike mobile targets in western Ukraine. They are out of PGMs and have no ground forces there.

The “hardened” middle eastern fighters are just a little lose high and the right than an average citizen.

One out of 100 over there are above infantry level here.

No, not everyone. If you go to college, you’re exempt. The conscripts are mostly from LC/not college bound.

Russia struggled to innovate a few domestic high-tech weapons (Like the T-90 tank), and get their military to adopt them.

But the budgets to actually produce and field these modern weapons in any meaningful amount, were all stolen by the Oligarchs, and the $$ converted into Super-yachts and London penthouses.

Hence, the majority of their army is armed with weapons left over from before 1989.
