My mattress was causing me back and hip pain for 3 months!

And yes, I’ve been scaring myself on google. DH also cant remember what year we bought any of the mattresses in the house. Now I’m wondering if we also should replace our kids’ mattresses. They are teens.

I am that poster and I'd guess maybe so! Teens and their young bodies probably aren't as affected by an old mattress-- plus they put less wear and tear on them as 40-60-80 lb kids. But I'd guess it might still be a good idea.

Tonight I'm going to rotate my mattress and see if that helps a bit. Not a long term solution, but could tell me something about what's causing the back pain since we so rarely even rotate our mattress. Like maybe I haven't in a year or more! I might also sleep on my kid's mattress one night-- it's cheap but like a month old.

If signs point to mine needing to be replaced, which I'm sure they will, I'll need to bite the bullet. $1000 +/- is a lot for us, and I'm currently out of work, but if it improves our sleep it might literally pay for itself. If I need one fewer hour of sleep per day (I've been seeming to need an extra 1-2 hours in the past year! Huh!) then I'll probably have more energy to finish projects, cook at home even. Ore often, get another job sooner. I've been stressing the importance of our kid's sleep to DH lately and, well!!

Actually now that I think of it, DH has been taking more catnaps in the afternoon in the past year or two, so...

Can't believe it's been staring me in the face this whole time! I had no idea!

It really is crazy, PP.

Like, my hips would hurt just sanding still, but not while walking oddly enough. And I was starting to envy the young and pain free. Haha! I was starting to mourn living without pain and wondering what I wouldn't be able to do as I age and my body continues to deteriorate.

I still can't believe it.

OP, I appreciate you! (I am that PP.) Assuming a new mattress does the trick, it will have made the entire existence of DCUM worthwhile.

❤️❤️

PP with an update-- we rotated the mattress last night and there was a MARKED improvement in my pain this morning-- I think way too much to be a placebo effect. More than 50%. I'll also try my daughter's bed, but I'm going to start looking for mattresses ASAP!

I'm glad to hear that! I wonder how many people are walking around with body aches because of their mattresses. (I also wonder why my chiropractor didn't mention my mattress...)

Anyone else have thoughts on Saatva?

That makes me happy, PP!

PP reporting back after four nights with a new mattress. Wow! My shoulder pain, which I have had on and off for years (!!!!), has melted away. I can’t believe the difference. Thank you OP for the inspiration!

Everyone, please listen to OP and get a new mattress!

In case it’s helpful, we did go with the Saatva and it’s heaven for those fond of a firm mattress.

NP. Early 40s. Lower back has been aching for months. Thought it was COVID stress and anxiety while I slept. Went camping last month. It poured one night so we slept in the back of the SUV with the rear seats folded but no mattress/padding AND MY BACK FELT BETTER THAN IN MY OWN BED 🤬🤬🤬.
Currently mattress shopping but overwhelmed.
Has anyone NOT been happy going to memory foam (Casper) from legacy 12ish y/o coils/box spring?

Are these with or without box springs? What is a box spring? Are they in? Out? Old-fashioned? Can they contribute to back pain? Inquiring minds (and backs) want to know.

OP here:

I used my same, old box spring because I like more height, and I’m thinking of getting a new one (Zinus, from Amazon). I have a Zinus box spring in my guest room, and I like it because it’s pretty tall.

Good luck, PP! I’m telling you, my Purple is like being enveloped in a cloud…while still being moderately firm.

We went mattress shopping and fell in love with the Temperpedic Hybrid….at $3500. Anyone have cheaper comparable mattresses?

I'm a side sleeper and got a Helix. Love it.

I'm going to buy the Ikea morgedal. I like my daughter's and it's held up for 7 years so well. If only I could remember for sure if we got firm vs medium firm. I don't want to go to the store!!!

morgedal queen is only 249!

I just wanted to bump up this thread in thankfulness for OP! I was the PP from way back, skeptical that changing your mattress more often than every 20 years (LOLOMG) was a possible ploy by Big Mattress. I had been intrigued because I thought my body was just falling apart after the age of 40, but my mattress was 18 years old.

I ended up with a very modest Serta in the ~$800 range that I got a deal on for $500. We did keep our old box spring, but even so, OH MY GOSH

Hip and back pain upon waking, that had bothered me for 1-2 years (I think?) just went completely away. We did keep our old mattress for now, for guests, because it's actually not terrible, and it never bothered DH. Recently I had to sleep on it for a night here and there, and it was fine. But last week, I had to sleep on it 3 nights in a row and that old pain was back.

THANK YOU OP! I really can't thank you enough. I had even been diagnosed with sleep apnea. I had terrible sleep with many wakings, and when I did an at-home study, the doctors said it was just over the borderline. So I do believe I have that tendency and some actual mild obstruction. I used a CPAP for a while, but when I lost 5-10 lbs, I found my apnea/whatever it was wasn't as bad, so just ditched the machine. Still, I would wake enough for it to be noticeable. BUT my wakings were drastically reduced by getting the new mattress. From a perception of 20x/night before being diagnosed with apnea, to 5x/night after losing a small amount of weight (w/o CPAP) to maybe 1-2x now, just from changing the mattress.

Like I said, I had/have something going on that's not just the mattress, but I'm kind of shocked now that the original doc who heard I woke frequently didn't at least ask me about the age of my mattress (then 15 years old) before referring me to a specialist, who also didn't ask. I didn't have many risk factors for sleep apnea anyway. Hmph.

IN CONCLUSION:

Anyone with a mattress more than 10 years old, especially if you're having little aches and pains you notice in the morning-- GET A NEW ONE!!!

Love my Ikea mattresses. Need to replace as going on 12 years old, but not that expensive. I bought 3 different types for the 3 bedrooms so I sleep on any of them depending on how I feel.

Also I realized at one point it was my 30 year old box-spring from previous beds that was causing the squeaking.

I bought the Purple Hybrid mattress over a month ago and I'm in love. I did buy the platform frame from them as well and got rid of a 15 year old Serta with box spring.

I bought the hybrid so I wouldn't be hot. All my little aches and joint pain went away and my morning headaches are gone! One odd thing is that I was a side sleeper forever but I've been so comfortable I find myself sleeping on my back.

I wish I had a new mattress. Current mattress is a 19 years old king size. Despite rotating it you can see the valleys where we normally sleep. I try to sleep on the high spots that haven't been used as much. I have been trying to talk DH into getting a new mattress for several years. No luck. He was raised by parents who believed mattresses last a lifetime. It rubbed off on him. Our current mattress is so uncomfortable.
