I just wanted to bump up this thread in thankfulness for OP! I was the PP from way back, skeptical that changing your mattress more often than every 20 years (LOLOMG) was a possible ploy by Big Mattress. I had been intrigued because I thought my body was just falling apart after the age of 40, but my mattress was 18 years old. I ended up with a very modest Serta in the ~$800 range that I got a deal on for $500. We did keep our old box spring, but even so, OH MY GOSH Hip and back pain upon waking, that had bothered me for 1-2 years (I think?) just went completely away. We did keep our old mattress for now, for guests, because it's actually not terrible, and it never bothered DH. Recently I had to sleep on it for a night here and there, and it was fine. But last week, I had to sleep on it 3 nights in a row and that old pain was back. THANK YOU OP! I really can't thank you enough. I had even been diagnosed with sleep apnea. I had terrible sleep with many wakings, and when I did an at-home study, the doctors said it was just over the borderline. So I do believe I have that tendency and some actual mild obstruction. I used a CPAP for a while, but when I lost 5-10 lbs, I found my apnea/whatever it was wasn't as bad, so just ditched the machine. Still, I would wake enough for it to be noticeable. BUT my wakings were drastically reduced by getting the new mattress. From a perception of 20x/night before being diagnosed with apnea, to 5x/night after losing a small amount of weight (w/o CPAP) to maybe 1-2x now, just from changing the mattress. Like I said, I had/have something going on that's not just the mattress, but I'm kind of shocked now that the original doc who heard I woke frequently didn't at least ask me about the age of my mattress (then 15 years old) before referring me to a specialist, who also didn't ask. I didn't have many risk factors for sleep apnea anyway. Hmph. IN CONCLUSION: Anyone with a mattress more than 10 years old, especially if you're having little aches and pains you notice in the morning-- GET A NEW ONE!!!
