My mattress was causing me back and hip pain for 3 months!

I'm sleeping on an Amazon cheapie and it's definitely time for a new one. My friend just researched a bunch and bought a nectar because it was a little cheaper and they have a one year return policy. I've also heard a lot of people rave about the Saatva but I'm a side sleeper and that seemed to be the only continent of "meh" reviewers. Plus it's a little over a grand. I still haven't decided what to do.

My current mattress (a Simmons BeautyRest) is 12 years old and due for replacement. I'm tempted to venture away from a traditional innerspring, especially if mattress technology has come a long way over the past decade. But I keep testing things like Casper and Purple and memory foam and always end up curling up on the old-school Sealys and Simmons in the showroom. I just dislike the box spring and eventual squeakiness.
No. I have a Purple mattress (the Hybrid 3) and a Purple pillow. Zero powder issues. I sleep like a baby now and my back and hips are so much better.

I bought my last 3 mattresses from Costco because of free return. I did not have to return any.

My brother bought a IKEA Morgedal mattress for his son's bed. Both he and his wife like it better than his own expensive one. I might try that. Can always throw it away after 1-2 years.

We bought for DD too, but tried in store first. I think we went medium firmness, but cannot remember! Go try. It has lasted for years and held up real well.

OMG this was me above and I think I've seen the light! (I admit I did initially suspect it was one of those "lather, rinse, repeat" bits of propaganda from Big Mattress lmao.)

I have been waking up every morning for the past 1-2 years sore as heck in my hips and back, subsiding as the day progressed. You'd think that would have been a sign!? It's right here on this list:

https://www.cnet.com/health/sleep/how-long-does-a-mattress-last/

But because of COVID, I haven't seen doctors much until recently-- basically the pain developed during COVID times. I only recently mentioned it to a rheumatologist (I was there because I had other symptoms of possible RA, which I do not seem to have). She didn't mention the mattress possibility at all, just told me I was over 40 and might try Pilates. I am totally out of shape so I, too, blamed it on that.

But I had been looking up all kind of info on "back pain at night"-- Dr. Google is always good for a scare-- yet it wasn't truly at night, it was upon waking.

Only when I read this thread did it vaguely occur to me that I remembered waking up without back pain when visiting my parents recently (first time in 1.5 years not in my own bed)... I still am not sure if that was true every night I was there, but maybe?

Anyway, I never suspected, partly because my mattress still looks awesome and it feels good-- at least when you get into it. It's not lumpy or worn or squeaky or any of the other "signs" in the article above. And I remember my grandmother keeping her mattresses for 20-30 years, and I never remember my parents replacing a mattress when I was growing up unless they got a different sized bed, or we moved to a larger house and they put their old bed (and mattress) in a new bedroom and got a new one for themselves... Not just "oh, time to replace our mattress!"

But, uh.... We got our mattress for our 5th wedding anniversary, and...

We just celebrated our 23rd.

Purple; it’s expensive as hell, but good.

haha. I came to this thread to see if the Purple mattress was the one causing you pain. I loathe ours. I am glad you are enjoying yours and are pain free.

Love the purple mattress. Great for side sleepers. Some people don’t like the feel and prefer memory foam. There are so many brands. I heard ghost and sleep number are good too.

My friends either love or hate their sleep number. There is no middle ground. One replaced sleep number with IKEA and is happier so I’m unsure what to do.
Can research them to death and try it out but you don’t really know until you sleep on it!

I hated the nectar mattress - went back to my old one.

To 11:33, I just read your post several times to make sure I didn’t write it. I recently visited my parents for the first time in almost two years and didn’t have pain. And yes, I’ve been scaring myself on google. DH also cant remember what year we bought any of the mattresses in the house. Now I’m wondering if we also should replace our kids’ mattresses. They are teens.

I like my Avocado. I am a side sleeper and a firmer mattress.

I'm a side sleeper who bought a Saatva last year. For the first few months, I thought "this is fine." Then it must have broken in and now I LOVE it. I look forward to getting in bed each night!

I am that poster and I'd guess maybe so! Teens and their young bodies probably aren't as affected by an old mattress-- plus they put less wear and tear on them as 40-60-80 lb kids. But I'd guess it might still be a good idea.

Tonight I'm going to rotate my mattress and see if that helps a bit. Not a long term solution, but could tell me something about what's causing the back pain since we so rarely even rotate our mattress. Like maybe I haven't in a year or more! I might also sleep on my kid's mattress one night-- it's cheap but like a month old.

If signs point to mine needing to be replaced, which I'm sure they will, I'll need to bite the bullet. $1000 +/- is a lot for us, and I'm currently out of work, but if it improves our sleep it might literally pay for itself. If I need one fewer hour of sleep per day (I've been seeming to need an extra 1-2 hours in the past year! Huh!) then I'll probably have more energy to finish projects, cook at home even. Ore often, get another job sooner. I've been stressing the importance of our kid's sleep to DH lately and, well!!

Actually now that I think of it, DH has been taking more catnaps in the afternoon in the past year or two, so...

Can't believe it's been staring me in the face this whole time! I had no idea!

Love my purple! Not really more expensive than other brands.
