My mattress was causing me back and hip pain for 3 months!

OP here.

I just called my chiropractor and cancelled my weekly appointments from here on out. I still can't believe all this mental anguish was because of my mattress. I kept thinking, "So, this is 46, huh?"

WTF.

...Also, I'm truly thrilled my situation (and this resultant thread) has helped so many of you. It seriously makes it almost worth it.

And yes, I’ve been scaring myself on google. DH also cant remember what year we bought any of the mattresses in the house. Now I’m wondering if we also should replace our kids’ mattresses. They are teens.

I am that poster and I'd guess maybe so! Teens and their young bodies probably aren't as affected by an old mattress-- plus they put less wear and tear on them as 40-60-80 lb kids. But I'd guess it might still be a good idea.

Tonight I'm going to rotate my mattress and see if that helps a bit. Not a long term solution, but could tell me something about what's causing the back pain since we so rarely even rotate our mattress. Like maybe I haven't in a year or more! I might also sleep on my kid's mattress one night-- it's cheap but like a month old.

If signs point to mine needing to be replaced, which I'm sure they will, I'll need to bite the bullet. $1000 +/- is a lot for us, and I'm currently out of work, but if it improves our sleep it might literally pay for itself. If I need one fewer hour of sleep per day (I've been seeming to need an extra 1-2 hours in the past year! Huh!) then I'll probably have more energy to finish projects, cook at home even. Ore often, get another job sooner. I've been stressing the importance of our kid's sleep to DH lately and, well!!

Actually now that I think of it, DH has been taking more catnaps in the afternoon in the past year or two, so...

Can't believe it's been staring me in the face this whole time! I had no idea!

It really is crazy, PP.

Like, my hips would hurt just sanding still, but not while walking oddly enough. And I was starting to envy the young and pain free. Haha! I was starting to mourn living without pain and wondering what I wouldn't be able to do as I age and my body continues to deteriorate.

I still can't believe it.

What about one of the new Japanese cardboard beds?

Just want to put in a plug for Urban Mattress in Vienna. You can actually try out the mattresses there. They aren't pushy at all. We bought one pre-pandemic and still love it.

whatever you do, don't buy a Sleep Number. Gimmicky pieces of crap. And very expensive.

also, every 7 years?

I've literally read that nowhere, ever. Even as a very young adult in the 90s, buying my first mattress, I knew it was max 10 years, but really more like 7ish.

Beware of trying out mattresses in the store though--they don't feel the same when you get the new one home. I bought one last summer that felt great in the store but killed my back, so I returned it and got a different ultra plush pillow top that turned out to be ultra firm. I ended up going to Ikea and getting a pillow top for it which helps, but I'd rather just have a mattress that feels like the one I picked out in the store.

Same here OP. We got an Avocado last year and I LOVE it. All my aches and pains have disappeared. And I like that it’s all natural. The Avocado is very firm but we got the pillow top and it’s like sleeping in a hotel bed. They have a generous return policy too if you don’t end up liking it.

OP, I appreciate you! (I am that PP.) Assuming a new mattress does the trick, it will have made the entire existence of DCUM worthwhile.

If you read further in the thread, you will see I am now convinced. But I never *read* 20 years anywhere... I literally just assumed based on family experience. I'm usually a big time researcher, but I haven't bought a mattress in almost 20 years, when both the Internet and I were pretty young. And my family never talked about it, and I never happened upon a magazine article that explained it, so I guess I'd been living in ignorance!

I got a latex foam topper for mine. Amazing difference and much cheaper than a new mattress!

OP, you are an inspiration! Thank you! We have been talking about getting a new mattress for forever, but now are going to actually do it.

Anyone else have thoughts on Saatva?
