My brother works for Trader Joe's. His hours each week are all over the place. He desperately wants 40+ hours a week as ge has a family, and has asked for morning hours so he can be home with his kids and was told they could accommodate him. He was on unemployment which took him over 4 months of calling multiple people to try and collect and let them know he accepted a new job. Guess what? He gets between 20-35 hours a week and is constantly scheduled for evening work causing him to pay a sitter to watch his kids when they are back from school. He wishes he stayed on unemployment. |
Mississippi just joined as well. |
And I thought TJ was considered a good employer? Imagine KFC… |
Economic dynamos every one. |
Why can't your nieces and nephews watch themselves? |
They are in many ways, good benefits, but in his case, he had certain requirements that they couldn't meet after telling him they could. |

| Lots of white collar people have this misconception of how stable these service industry jobs are. It’s not like the old days. They have scheduling systems now to ensure max profitability, but also makes employees work less then full time hours (usually so the fewest possible get benefits). And they schedule you on a variety of shifts so you can’t even take a second job to get more hours, or god forbid need consistent child care. Even worse is being in a tipped job since tips are down you end up making minimum wage. The smart, not lazy, move is to stay on unemployment if the wage is even close because it is also consistent and no need to juggle childcare. |
Feel the same way about blue states and cities, New York, Baltimore, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles .... could go on and on. You got what you voted for, enjoy. |
The lack of stability in minimum wage jobs preceded Covid. If these people desire more stability, they can pursue higher education or a trade. Progressives need to stop infantilizing people. |
Being a waiter is not a minimum wage job in most major metros, but now it may be! They are making the smart choice, less customers equals less tips and even worse shift cuts. All so the boss can still make bank but screw the employees. |
I don't blame workers for taking advantage of the situation. I mean, people love free stuff, particularly money. But, for Biden to pretend that increased unemployment benefits have no effect on people's willingness to work is pure fantasy or ignorance. |
The stupid is strong with this one. |
Serfdom... perfect reference. Speaking of serfdom -- have you watched "The Great" on Hulu yet? It's amazing. https://youtu.be/rjO_xBGvrPI |
