VRE is no more soul sucking than any other commute, and honestly it is much less soul sucking than a closer in commute on metro where you need to be mindful of not being robbed.

I've ridden the metro thousands of times and never worried about getting robbed.. Just because vre is full of middle aged people doesn't make it any safer than the metro. I'm talking about how it would take 1hr + to get to union station from burke. VRE is definitely a nicer ride than the metro but the constant delays and lack of available times (runs every 45 mins during rush hr and pretty much stuck in dc if you need to go home during the day) made me resent it so much. I hated the feeling of potentially missing my train because that would mean I'd have to wait another 45 minutes to go home or to work. |
| People who are recommending FFX city.. Are you talking about near old town ffx? I don't see how many ffx city neighborhoods differ from any random suburban neighborhood with a shopping center nearby. |
Community feel. Activities in Old Town. It’s not just a strip mall. |

Have you actually done it? DH has for many years pre pandemic. It’s fine. Usually an hour door to door including riding his bike from the metro to our house. |

You don’t see anyone under 25 on a VRE ever. A much more peaceful experience and you don’t have to stand. As far as soul sucking commutes go: walking to work > biking to work > commuter rail > driving in traffic > Metro |
You’re right, of course, but it’s the Vienna Syndrome on display, where people over-compensate for a far-out location by exaggerating its “neighborhood feel” and “special” activities. It helps manage the fact that NoVa is basically suburban sprawl from Arlington all the way out to western Loudoun. |
| Oakton. I notice that nicest one from the list already sold. |
Hustle over to #3, OP. It’s a great neighborhood. I live nearby in FCC and walk through that neighborhood frequently. Check it out. I agree with the PP’s assessments here — also #4 is already pending. I also agree with other people’s recommendations of Fairfax City. Seems like it’s a great place to live and is so much more affordable than Vienna or FCC. I sometimes wonder if we should have moved there and gotten more for our money but I appreciate the slightly closer commute. |
There is a plan to upgrade VRE to more frequent service, in both directions, all day. Also to connect to MARC in Maryland. Whether or not this plan is implemented in your lifetime is another question, but if it is implemented, it will be a game-changer for the whole region. |
| I'm just surprised how many people are suggesting fairfax city since a lot of dcumers hate diversity |
If this happens (it won't) then I will happily live in Burke. |
