All teams from the 12U through U18U age groups must compete in one or more of the following
leagues: a VYSA member sanctioned league and/or the EDP League and/or the EDP National League
Conference League. The league must consist of at least four teams with the team playing at least three
(3) league games against different opponents during the seasonal year.
If a team participates in VYSA State Cup competition and does not complete the required league play
prior to June 15, 2021, the team will forfeit all VYSA State Cup games played, pay a fine of $500.00,
and the team, if more than 9 players return, will not be allowed to participate in the VYSA State
Championship Series games the following seasonal year. No opponent’s scores or standings in any of
the State Cup games forfeited for this reason will be affected.

So let's take Arlington's Boys U14 ECNL team. They only compete in ECNL. They do not compete in EDP or any other VYSA league. Can they not participate in State Cup? If they can. how do they get around this rule?

The only way would be to register for EDP along with ECNL. On some weekends, they would have games with both leagues. This is what the U15 and up Arlington boys’ teams did in the fall and were able to participate in state cup. The whole point of state cup is to offer a path to regional and ultimately national competition. Something that you can’t get otherwise when you play CCL, ncsl, etc. ECNL has its own showcases and national competition platforms, so, in theory, ECNL teams have no reason to participate in state cup and in past years ECNL teams weren’t interested in state cup. This changed this year because of covid. ECNL teams were less eager to fly across the country for ECNL showcases and a number of ECNL events were canceled. So suddenly ECNL teams, like Arlington, became interested in state cup as a way to get more games in

OK, but Arlington U14 ECNL and McLean U14 ECNL boys do NOT play any games in EDP or any league other than ECNL currently...yet they are in the State Cup draw.

Maybe they registered for EDP to be permitted to apply for state cup but don’t plan to play EDP games and will pay the fine? McLean U14 is registered as a non-league cup team (NLCT) which I thought was only allowed for U11 and under according to VYSA.

Preposterous. If clubs don’t take a stand against this kind of nonsense, parents should and find others like RSD who may be willing to publicize the pettiness and supreme idiocy of these leagues and their little walled gardens.

ECNL starts at U13 so at U12 your daughter’s team was pre-ECNL. I’m guessing it was Loudoun or McLean. At that point, if Loudoun, the team was still Loudoun Red and was playing NCSL or CCL and was thus allowed to participate in state cup. That changed after U13 when the league became ECNL.

Yes. I am just bringing up this point because there is a lot of discussion on ECNL teams being scared to play in state cup. It appears we (ECNL) are not allowed to.

Arlington boys have always entered state cup, except for the age groups that were playing in DA and were not permitted to enter according to the rules of the DA. The only thing that changed was that DA collapsed and therefore those three age groups also entered the state cup.

I understand older kids trying to be on the best teams and getting noticed, other leagues' showcases taking precidence and the like, but it's your state. Bring your best and let's see how good you are. Might be one and done or you may get to claim the title. To be the best you have to beat the best. If you think you are already the best then show it. Random flighted tournaments don't give you that.

100% agree. Well done all the clubs that enter - and shame on those that don't.

Plus if Arlington can enter its teams - including the ones above U15, I fail to see that any other club has a good reason not to.

Not sure if you saw the earlier post that explains that clubs like Arlington that’ have their top tram in ECNL can only enter stare cup by also signing up their teams to play in a second league, like EDP, which means that those teams are playing constantly between ECNL and EDP, plus state cup games. Usually, it’s the teams that have big rosters that can do that, otherwise you are looking at injuries that teams with smaller rosters can’t afford.

I don't believe this is true. I think it is possible to apply and pay for the USYS player cards for a team without entering EDP or any other afiliated league. McLean does indeed enter at least some of its teams into EDP as well as ECNL - although I suspect they did that this year because of covid and uncertainty of how many agmes they might get from either league + the huge rosters they have for their teams means they need more games to get their players playing time as well. Arlington did not enter most of its teams into EDP. Or at least they did not play any games, nor did they ever appear in the schedule / standings for EDP.

Anonymous wrote:Someone said that you need to register for EDP or a USYS league to be eligible for State Cup. Is that true? To the best of my knowledge, all the club has to do is register the kids with USYS and it's done. No need for the team to register for a league. Does anyone know for sure?

This is my understanding as well. No - I don't know for sure - but see my post above - I'm almost certain Arlington did not enter its teams into EDP (U12s aside for the ADL) which appears to be evidence supporting this position.

I have an older ECNL player and was a "guest" playing with the second team. At the time we were told the club had to "buy" a player card for my DD and a few of her ECNL team mates. And before anyone gets excited about them trying to rig the games by having a bunch of ECNL players guest - they asked the players with the least amount of ECNL playtime to guest. We have a largish roster. My DD was coming back from an injury so she was just starting to play a small amount of minutes so this was perfect for her.

Maybe they form a small private league with three other clubs and all play each other? That would appear to satisfy the rules.

But they don't. I'm very familiar with this team. They don't play games outside of ECNL. Hell, the coach won't even let the kids play in tournaments.

All the Arlington teams scrimmage regularly don't they? Would you even know if Arlington had registered a small league for some of those games so they counted? As far as I can see, that would meet the requirement.
