Look under Eligibility in the state cup rules. It spells out that teams must participate in league play or there is a $5000 fine if you register for state cup (and say EDP to be eligible) but don’t actually play league games. Only exception is U19.
All teams from the 12U through U18U age groups must compete in one or more of the following leagues: a VYSA member sanctioned league and/or the EDP League and/or the EDP National League Conference League. The league must consist of at least four teams with the team playing at least three (3) league games against different opponents during the seasonal year. If a team participates in VYSA State Cup competition and does not complete the required league play prior to June 15, 2021, the team will forfeit all VYSA State Cup games played, pay a fine of $500.00, and the team, if more than 9 players return, will not be allowed to participate in the VYSA State Championship Series games the following seasonal year. No opponent’s scores or standings in any of the State Cup games forfeited for this reason will be affected. So let's take Arlington's Boys U14 ECNL team. They only compete in ECNL. They do not compete in EDP or any other VYSA league. Can they not participate in State Cup? If they can. how do they get around this rule?
The only way would be to register for EDP along with ECNL. On some weekends, they would have games with both leagues. This is what the U15 and up Arlington boys’ teams did in the fall and were able to participate in state cup. The whole point of state cup is to offer a path to regional and ultimately national competition. Something that you can’t get otherwise when you play CCL, ncsl, etc. ECNL has its own showcases and national competition platforms, so, in theory, ECNL teams have no reason to participate in state cup and in past years ECNL teams weren’t interested in state cup. This changed this year because of covid. ECNL teams were less eager to fly across the country for ECNL showcases and a number of ECNL events were canceled. So suddenly ECNL teams, like Arlington, became interested in state cup as a way to get more games in
OK, but Arlington U14 ECNL and McLean U14 ECNL boys do NOT play any games in EDP or any league other than ECNL currently...yet they are in the State Cup draw.
Arlington boys have always entered state cup, except for the age groups that were playing in DA and were not permitted to enter according to the rules of the DA. The only thing that changed was that DA collapsed and therefore those three age groups also entered the state cup.
