100% agree. Well done all the clubs that enter - and shame on those that don't. |
Plus if Arlington can enter its teams - including the ones above U15, I fail to see that any other club has a good reason not to. |
Not sure if you saw the earlier post that explains that clubs like Arlington that’ have their top tram in ECNL can only enter stare cup by also signing up their teams to play in a second league, like EDP, which means that those teams are playing constantly between ECNL and EDP, plus state cup games. Usually, it’s the teams that have big rosters that can do that, otherwise you are looking at injuries that teams with smaller rosters can’t afford. |

| Someone said that you need to register for EDP or a USYS league to be eligible for State Cup. Is that true? To the best of my knowledge, all the club has to do is register the kids with USYS and it's done. No need for the team to register for a league. Does anyone know for sure? |
There are requirements to actually play in a USYS/VYSA league or EDP. You can’t just buy USYS passes. It’s in the state cup rules https://bsbproduction.s3.amazonaws.com/portals/27433/docs/state%20cup/state%20cup%20rules%202020-2021%20final%202-26-2021.pdf |
| Look under Eligibility in the state cup rules. It spells out that teams must participate in league play or there is a $5000 fine if you register for state cup (and say EDP to be eligible) but don’t actually play league games. Only exception is U19. |
Does this prevent ECNL teams from participating? Is this why clubs send their second team? I have a 2008 ECNL DD. Her team was going to participate last year but it was cancelled (thanks covid). This year they were told they cannot enter because they are ECNL. |
|
My kid’s first team plays in it. Small Club, EDP.
It shouldn’t be reserved for the biggest. |
ECNL is part of US Club soccer, not USYS. The only way for an ECNL team to participate is to register for both ECNL and one of the USYS leagues, like edp, CCL, ncsl. |
| I have a 2007 ECNL player. Our team participated at U12 and it was such a great experience. Girls won and went to regionals. We asked the coach why we can't do it this year and were told that ECNL clubs are prohibited from entering. |
ECNL starts at U13 so at U12 your daughter’s team was pre-ECNL. I’m guessing it was Loudoun or McLean. At that point, if Loudoun, the team was still Loudoun Red and was playing NCSL or CCL and was thus allowed to participate in state cup. That changed after U13 when the league became ECNL. |
All teams from the 12U through U18U age groups must compete in one or more of the following leagues: a VYSA member sanctioned league and/or the EDP League and/or the EDP National League Conference League. The league must consist of at least four teams with the team playing at least three (3) league games against different opponents during the seasonal year. If a team participates in VYSA State Cup competition and does not complete the required league play prior to June 15, 2021, the team will forfeit all VYSA State Cup games played, pay a fine of $500.00, and the team, if more than 9 players return, will not be allowed to participate in the VYSA State Championship Series games the following seasonal year. No opponent’s scores or standings in any of the State Cup games forfeited for this reason will be affected. So let's take Arlington's Boys U14 ECNL team. They only compete in ECNL. They do not compete in EDP or any other VYSA league. Can they not participate in State Cup? If they can. how do they get around this rule? |
Arlington U12 Red may be the second team, but I don't think the club wants the U12 Pre-Academy team to scrimmage against them - could be a pretty close match. |
The only way would be to register for EDP along with ECNL. On some weekends, they would have games with both leagues. This is what the U15 and up Arlington boys’ teams did in the fall and were able to participate in state cup. The whole point of state cup is to offer a path to regional and ultimately national competition. Something that you can’t get otherwise when you play CCL, ncsl, etc. ECNL has its own showcases and national competition platforms, so, in theory, ECNL teams have no reason to participate in state cup and in past years ECNL teams weren’t interested in state cup. This changed this year because of covid. ECNL teams were less eager to fly across the country for ECNL showcases and a number of ECNL events were canceled. So suddenly ECNL teams, like Arlington, became interested in state cup as a way to get more games in |
