Doses get thrown away EVERY day. It’s crazy. Glad to hear Safeway and Giant are finally just giving the leftovers to anyone. A senior housing facility in DC was doing vaccinations on Jan. 6th when Bowser issued the curfew. CVS told their vaccinators to pack up and go home before the event was over. They now have to come back to finish the residents and staff while nearly 100 doses were thrown away because they are not allowed to refrigerate again after getting thawed.

OMG Why no standby list>>>>???????

Sorry, but the pharmacists chasing "extra people" down the aisle is great for the people who get flagged down, but typifies their dumb vaccination planning. Each site INCLUDING senior housing facilities should maintain a stand-by list. I understand this rare curfew circumstance of having to shut down unexpectedly (though could city govt, not have notified them they were considering it or coordinated better??)-- but they should have a better ongoing system, like a STAND BY list of whomever is in the "next pot", that chasing random shoppers down the aisle. This sucks!

According to the replies to the Twitter thread posted above, no pharmacies in DC are taking names for standbys and there are hourlong lines at closing. Ugh!

Lines of hopeful people or lines of people they are processing and need to finish? DC needs to get more shots in arms more quickly. This sucks!

I would like to hear from the 65+ crowd on how it's going this week? Things moving along?

OK--following up. This was released last week:

"DC Health has announced that District of Columbia residents who are age 65 and older will be able to schedule a vaccine appointment starting the week of Jan. 11. "

This is what it states today (1/11) on the DC Covid Portal:
https://coronavirus.dc.gov/vaccinatedc

Thank you for your interest in registering with our vaccination portal. At this moment, vaccination appointments are only available for workers in health care settings. To schedule an appointment, please read the information below and then proceed to the required questionnaire.

What am I missing here?

You are missing what it says today (1/11): Thank you for your interest in registering with our vaccination portal. At this moment, vaccination appointments are only available for workers in health care settings and District residents 65 years of age and older.

I have a question about the mechanics of getting an appointment. Today as we know 65+ are eligible to get vaccinated. My elderly mom filled out questionnaire and came to the page where it lists places to get vaccinated. But there are no available appointments for any of these sites for next 30 days. Are we doing something wrong?

She is not only 70 but also high risk in terms of health, so we are very eager to get her vaccinated ASAP. Should we just call pharmacies directly?

Thank you. That was activated at noon. The message above was from this morning. I am glad they are rolling into the 65+ crowd. We need to move this along.

Posting more clearly:

Adding on:
One of the question marks around the "Biden plan" (giving more people the first dose, at risk of longer wait for second) is that states and DC have not demonstrated a capacity to move efficiently through doses they already have. If you like the Biden plan, Vaccinations still would need to be speeded up or all you would get is backlog in addition to what we have now for the first dose.

Did she look at every single location? Not just the ones closest to her? Not available for 30 days is ridiculous; if that is the case-they need to ready more sites.

My parents got appointments today. They had to scroll through every site and got to number 16 on their list (created by proximity to their house) before they could find any slots available. She needs to try every single site no matter where it is, but it may be that they are now fully booked at all sites and will need to try again tomorrow.

Thank you so much. She tried at least 10 sites and we thought there was something wrong with the system. We will try again first thing tomorrow.

I can imagine that getting the 65+ crowd vaccinated will be difficult if the process doesn't improve.

For sure. I believe they have also set up a phone number? The 65+ crowd ranges from very digital savvy to not at all. They are going to have to push out and "find people" but also vaccinate briskly and move to the next group on schedule regardless of whether they have located all the 65+s. They can always show up after, but the next group should not be waiting around while vaccinations stall.

There is also a phone number to call to schedule but one of my mom's friends called a couple of hours ago and was 175 in line - I don't know if she is still waiting. But might be easier to try that tomorrow morning at 8am.

Holy S! I am BEYOND disappointed that so much effort went into developing this vaccine and so little into getting it into people arms. Am I allowed to complain about Her Saintly Eminence Bowser's efforts here?
