How long does Phase 1A vaccinations take?

Anonymous
In DC we love making fun of Alaska and North Dakota because their populations are about the same as ours. Interesting to see from the WaPo that they are inoculating more people faster.

A friend who works in a job that is ill-defined but might be sort of toward the bottom of 1A was contacted at the beginning of this week as eligible to sign up through her job in DC. She was confused, thinking it was a mistake. Nope...called, and was told they are moving on because the further up groups are just not showing up for the vaccine.

THis just does not bode well for the rest of the population if health care workers cannot be convinced to take the vaccine with it being available to them. Unbelievable.

Alaska is doing great! Why cant the next group leapfrog the healthcare workers, and the city/their employers can try to track them down and convince them and they can take it when they are ready? Are we all WAITING on a group of people that doesnt want it/cant be found? Wont this happen with the next group, and the next? Why no city run standby list rather than telling pharmacists "go find someone" (thats fine as a last ditch emergency stop gap). What is the covid vaccine mitigation strategy?

I almost think that it is time for the city to just create a huge one stop inoculation point at RFK/Armory. Have the DC National Guard run it if DCHealth can't. You drive in, register and get your vaccine and a location of your follow up shot if it is somewhere else in the city. The RFK/Armory location could be drive up. You could put another vaccination point on the Mall and another at the convention center. Maybe one at the temporarily closed Wardman Marriott / Omni Shoreham.

Point is that you could use your allotted doses in a day if you really wanted to get ahead of the curve.

Resident drives up. Provides proof of DC residency or whatever is required for registration. Receives intake form and is directed to vaccination point. Receives vaccination and out-processing form with location of follow up vaccination and passes through a quick vitals check. and goes on about their day.

This is not that difficult DCHealth.

According to the DCHealth Webpage there are 19 Public vaccination points across DC. To be clear there are others, however, they are at hospitals and Walgreens and are dedicated to vaccinating health care workers only.

Biden has vouched for the British model of not withholding the 2nd vaccine--ie using available doses to vaccinate round 1, and hoping more come for a slightly delayed round 2. However, if they can't get the available doses into arms quickly now--what is the point in flooding them with more? They seem incapable of efficient mass vaccination. I always thought our country could mobilize better in a crisis. It's just sad.

Hope is never a course of action.

Unbelievably it is time to roll out the National Guard to administer a vaccine.

Fortunately for us DC residents, DC has been hard at work on our COVID vaccination plan since May, 2020.

https://coronavirus.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/coronavirus/page_content/attachments/DC_COVID-19%20Vaccination%20Plan%2011.27.pdf

Starting in May 2020, the District started conducting discussion-based exercises as a part of the
COVID-19 vaccination planning process. Lessons learned from the H1N1 response, COVID-19
Testing Operations, as well as the Regional Medical Countermeasures (MCM) Exercise have
given the District knowledge of areas of improvement upon which to build and work through to
ensure that the COVID vaccine campaign is successful. Some of the discussion-based exercises
that the District has already conducted include:
• District Vaccine Operations: 9/22/2020, weekly ongoing discussions
• POD Logistics: 8/18/2020, monthly ongoing discussions
• Vaccine Data Management: 8/27/2020, monthly ongoing
• Vaccine Prioritization: 9/21/2020, weekly ongoing discussions
Listed below are the trainings/exercises that will take place in the form of a workshop, tabletop
exercise, and/or drill. This list is to be completed by February 2021 in preparation for phase 2
vaccine distribution and POD site set-up. Specific dates are to be determined.
• Vaccine transport and security/Cold Chain Management
• POD Kit transport and security
• Vaccine data management
• Pre-registration/registration and screening
• Vaccine administration and distribution & anaphylaxis management
• POD supply
• POD resupply

DC Health will use quality improvement strategies such as Root-Cause Analysis, plan-do-studyact (PDSA) cycles, Gantt charts, and Fishbone diagramming leveraging the Lean Six Sigma
infrastructure that is embedded within the city’s public health agency. This will allow the District
to make improvements throughout the development and implementation of the COVID-19
vaccination program. These efforts will ensure the safety of every resident who receives the
COVID-19 vaccine.

Good job that there is a Lean Six Sigma Blackbelt leading the way.

Unbelievable.

Doses get thrown away EVERY day. It’s crazy. Glad to hear Safeway and Giant are finally just giving the leftovers to anyone. A senior housing facility in DC was doing vaccinations on Jan. 6th when Bowser issued the curfew. CVS told their vaccinators to pack up and go home before the event was over. They now have to come back to finish the residents and staff while nearly 100 doses were thrown away because they are not allowed to refrigerate again after getting thawed.
