How long does Phase 1A vaccinations take?

Phones work as well. We know how to use phones and dial numbers. We chose not to because we don't trust your shot. Where has the campaign be to spread information about the vaccine? DCHealth just rolls out a terrible website and says have at it. No thank you is what most of my neighbors are saying. We'll wait this out.

ok well then, don’t complain about the health disparities in Ward 8. It boggles the mind that you can be equipped and motivated to engage in this argument online and form relatively complex opinions, and yet you don’t have the ability to understand the science behind this amazingly effective vaccine? gtfo.

There needs to be educational reaching out to skeptics, not shaming.

This is a Darwin moment for the crazy Trump anti-vax crowd and the inner city conspiracy folks. Given the complexities of this vaccine distribution there is NO time to wait. Either get in line or get out of the way. Political correctness will literally cost lives.

Yup. For every person who doesn’t want their shot, there are 5 more lining up to take their place. So be it.

I was born in DC. I now live in Ward 3. I am disheartened by the discrimination in first denying Ward 3 residents vaccination clinic locations, and now denying them (and a few other Wards) vaccine slots. While vaccines sit in freezers--rather than do outreach in communities + provide transport, they are further limiting access based on zip code? Can they guarantee all the vaccines made available in this period of 'set aside' will be used by their target population, or will our city FURTHER fall behind in vaccinations??

I would like to know if Charles Allen and Elissa Silverman who are behind this move were vaccinated? Did they offer to give up their vaccine to a poorer, minority in our city?

This is so wrong-headed. I have no problem waiting patiently, but to be denied based on zip code? I am now looking at our family's options in other states, and I have very sour feelings towards DC.

Is anyone able to get in to register this morning? We have tried phone and internet and cannot get in. It looks like system must be overwhelmed?

Maybe Charles + Elissa should man some phones!

Did you read the WaPo article. Anti vaxers are anti vaxers for a litany of reasons and none have to do with Trump. That is simply short sighted and will continue to propagate COVID.

A bite from the article:

In my research on why parents reject some or all vaccines for their children, parents often told me that, despite public-health claims to the contrary, they don’t see all vaccines as equally important or beneficial for all people. Smallpox, they insisted, was different from chickenpox.

Others questioned claims of efficacy by pointing out how certain vaccines, like the one against pertussis (whooping cough), don’t provide lifetime immunity. Parents with whom I spoke saw vaccines as consumer products that they could choose cafeteria-style, consenting to one should it seem useful or important, while rejecting others. These parents are notably not “anti-vaxxers.” They simply trust their own judgment about what they and their children need more than they trust expert advice that offers what they typically called “a one-size-fits-all” approach to vaccines that did not feel relevant to their family.

That is the just a couple of the issues that DCHealth needs to be campaigning about right now.

Seriously, where is the inoculation campaign. I have not seen any signs of it. I listen to the radio and read the paper and ride public transport. I have not seen one sign touting the benefits of the COVID vaccine. Maybe the City Counsel is waiting for the federal government to do their advertising for them.

Nah. I’m happy to shame when they are spreading misinformation online.

they are so useless. just like with school reopening. they would rather grandstand and obstruct than actual helping to identify and resolve public policy issues.

Inoculation campaign? The world has been waiting for almost a year for this very moment. The longer we wait to achieve heard immunity the better chance the virus has to mutate. I haven’t seen my elderly parents in 11 months and my kids are now a year behind in school and likely will have lingering mental health impacts for years to come. I have exactly ZERO patience for anymore delays from Trump or Bowser or Mary Cheh.

PP, I think the point was that we are further delaying as speedy roll-out as possible, reaching any all takers in the 65+ category, to reach apparently harder to reach populations, but without any kind of campaign, strategy or support to reach them. So yes, we will all wait longer to see our parents while this effort fizzles and precious days to get shots in arms are lost.

Wow, I am stunned to see the push back on a COVID vaccine advertising campaign.

Do educated people really not understand why there is a slice of the population who mis trusts vaccines? This is not a new phenomenon. There were anti vaxers prior to covid.

Heck there are people in DC who REFUSE to vaccinate their kids against HPV. The City Counsel had to ram a dictatorial policy where they can talk to your kids about HPV vaccination because parents aren't.

There needs to be an advertising campaign to answer any number of great vaccination questions. We see them EVERY day on DCUM.

Do I need to keep wearing my mask one I get the vaccine?
Can I start traveling once I get the vaccine?
Will the vaccine last for life?
Is this like the flu shot and I need to get re shot in the fall?

There are 100 questions that should be answered in a public fashion.

It is even scarier that people on this board cannot acknowledge that and can only think to their individual needs of "I need to see my elderly parents and I understand the problem'.

Of course there should be a campaign, but vaccinating anyone willing now should not WAIT on a campaign. I think that is PPs point. "Freezers don't get Covid"

There are no vaccination points for Ward 3 residents. That is an intentional hurdle the city has put in place for Ward 3 elderly. Rather than put in mechanisms to support seniors in other Wards, they decided the easiest way to 'even out' their numbers is to put in as many hurdles as possible for seniors (and later other residents) in Ward 3. All while not using the current vaccine supply they have.

Is this grounds for a lawsuit?

given that ward 3 managed to get vaccinated at 20X/rate of Ward 8, I don’t think the lack of a site in Ward 3 alone can be a ground for action. But if there is express discrimination based on race - maybe. there’s a role for non-race-based affirmative action here but it will be muddled by the overly woke who on the one hand want to correct racial disparities, but don’t want to do any of the hard work to actually make the vaccine accessible to all.
