How many more inches did your son grow from age 13 onward?

Anonymous
Since the start of Covid in March, my son (14 at the time, turned 15 this September) has grown 7 inches and his voice just started to change. His foot grew to an 11.5 from a 10.5. He's about 5'9" right now, but still doesn't have full facial hair and when he broke his wrist this summer the Orthopedist said his growth plates were wide open and would be taller than his 5'10 and half inches dad.

He was tall for his age until 3rd grade, then leveled off. Some of his friends had major growth spurts in 6th/7th grade. My son is a Freshmen in HS and just really starting to grow now.

That tracks with all of us. Even as a woman, I grew an inch in college. My brother is 6'2" and grew an 1.5 inches in college, my husband and nephews also grew in college.

I see more kids having early growth spurts, but it is very normal for boys to do most of their growing in HS.

My 7th grader is 40th-50th percent height now and I hope he follows the same trajectory. He has a baby-face and voice still.

I have a 10 year old who is 5', which I think is around the 90th percentile- if he stays on his growth curve, it predicts he'll be 6'1", but I'm curious if he'll hit that sooner or if he'll grow nice and steadily till he's 18. I'm adopted and men of my racial background tend to be shorter on average, so I don't have any bio relatives to compare to.

Our neighbor grew to be a giant at the end of 5th grade. Towered over everyone at 5'8" almost 5'9", but he stayed there. He's in his Freshmen year of college now. His dad said he also finished all of his growing by middle school. This happened to some of my brother's friends who were much taller than him but stayed 5'8" and my brother ended up 6'2".

Now at age 13 he is 5'5'' and at 50%. I don't think he has had his major growth spurt yet, obviously, but wanted to ask those with older sons how many inches their boys grew from age 13 onward. I know every kid varies, I'm just curious. I don't have brothers and my husband isn't very tall, but all the men on my side of the family are 6 ft or 6' 2''(my uncles and first cousins). So far our son has always shared my body build type, and that of my male cousins(lanky and lean limbs). He has very long legs now, like a baby deer, with really long calf bones. Do you think this suggests a lot more height coming? He is an athlete and hopes to be taller than his 5'9'' dad...

I think the fact that he hasn't hit his growth spurt yet is an indication that he has a lot more height coming.

In my experience, the tallest kids are the ones who hit puberty late. They're often tall as kids, and then their friends start passing them. But then their friends stop growing, and they catch up, and keep going.

This does seem to be the case.
My son's friends who hit puberty early (11-12) have mostly ended up around 5"6-5'8" . There are a few exceptions but these is definitely something to it.

+1

They are the ones all of the soccer teams love. Things change A LOT when these kids are all 16/17.

When he was in elementary school, his doctor predicted an adult height of 5'9. He grew about 6 or 7 inches between 13.5 and 14.5 and was done growing by 16. He's a little over 5'9".

Yup, on DCUM everyone's son is 6'2", weighted GPA of 4.5, 1590 SATs, and in a top 25 college.

Well, to be fair OP did ask about height so those of us with tall sons have responded. My tall son has a learning disability, a crappy GPA, and we’ll be considering colleges that are SAT optional because he’s going to struggle with testing. But he’s tall. Yay?

What are the signs that a boy is done with growth spurts and may at the most grow 1 or 2 inches? My DS is 15, about 5 7", voice cracked, signs of beard that needs to trim once a week.

OP here:
Thanks to all of you who have responded. Based on patterns I'm seeing here, and my son's history, I think he has a lot more to grow as I would have expected. Very interesting how there is such variation.

I was going to point out to OP that most people responding seem to have very tall sons, so self selecting set of answers here.

My two stepsons - both late bloomers just like their dad - still added a couple of inches after the end of high school. They ended up at 6 feet.

My name turned 13 a week ago and I think he’s shot up 2 inches since then, no joke.

Many boys this age will continue to grow and I don’t think you’ll really know where your kid is going to end up, OP, until he gets there...

Our doc said if there is pubic hair then he is in puberty.

I see this in our future. My son is 12.5 and Tanner stage 2, he is not even 5' yet.

Between June 2022 and June 2024 my son (15) went from 5'6'' to 5'10'' and gained almost 30 lbs. He's steadily been about 75%ile for height and 40%ile for weight. He's always been a little tall and a little skinny since 1st grade or so. He is taller than both of us now.

Doctor said he might be 6'1'' but he had a knee X-ray last year for pain and that doctor (who did not report this to the pediatrician as far as I know) said his growth plates were close to closing, so we'll see.

My son was about 5'5 at 13 and is now 6'3.

Since someone bumped this up, maybe OP will. come back and tell us how tall he ended up. I love closure.
