I watched a few episodes and was so confused by this. Their poor contractors are all wearing masks but they aren’t and neither are any of the supervisors.

Maybe the non mask wearers were regularly tested during shooting So as not to shoot a tv show with people in masks?

Or they could just be narcissistic a holes. But wait, we knew that before seasons 1 & 2.

I think that’s a little harsh. TV shows are an industry like any other and they’re actors like any others. The whole industry has had to figure out how to try to film safely, without masks, to stay afloat.
Why couldn’t they film with masks?

The pillows were so much better than I thought they were going to be. I hope after the show the homeowner bought some inserts off Amazon and put them on her bed. They would look fine in that very plain room.

I thought the kitchen renovation in the 1908 house was really nice and reflected the home well.

I think they are going to get divorced. There was so much tension and she seems obviously annoyed by him and his inappropriate comments.

She could have used the pillows. They were pretty - and worst case scenario she could have layered them in. I did like the 1908 kitchen - but there white was appropriate. Every time she paints a cedar ceiling, the heart of a millworker dies.

Also, there are lots of closeted gay men in that world and might her husband be one of them?

My first thought was the husband is gay.

I came here to see if anyone else noticed this. The vibe between them is more like he’s the best gay friend. It was difficult to watch because it’s so obvious that he irritates her for reasons unknown to the viewers.

I think she had some great designs but she is definitely held back by the man she is married too. He seemed lazy tbh. I would love to see them do the show without the husband because I think it greatly impacted the quality.

I didn’t mind the all white cast or the high budgets of the participants. It’s representative of that market so it shouldn’t be that shocking, but ultimately the show could remain viable if they cut the husband. I actually liked Shea and thought she did a great job delivering what her customers wanted. I do wish that she took more design risks though. [b]Does anyone know of any Netflix or Hulu shows that are serious about design?
I feel like I’ve watched pretty much every one but would love to hear what everyone else’s favorites are.

I rolled my eyes at this, but then I watched the show, and I have to agree. They clearly wanted him there so there would be someone for her to banter with, but the chemistry is very awkward and he really doesn’t add anything.

I like Room to Improve on Prime. It features an architect that does home renovations in Ireland, so it has a different sensibility than the US shows, which are starting to all look alike to me.

not that pp but the one who is missing John from Curb Appeal. THANK YOU! I will check out Room to Improve!

NP here. Any other shows to recommend? Or blogs or podcasts? So far, we have Room to Improve and Design Doctors.

All of the Room to Improve houses look the same, too. I like Interior Design Masters on Netflix (early seasons) and Acorn.

Not really impressed.

It’s very underwhelming but there is no better proof there is a huge market for blah than DC.

Is an episode featuring a dc house? If so, which season/episode?

I suspect it would dramatically lower their ratings. It's hard to read facial expressions with masks. I wear a mask everywhere all the time! But it's silly to pretend it's not harder to understand people.

Mean spirited thread but what does anyone expect.

Its a look and sure it’s consistent. I like that she does a streamlined contemporary look without going too far. It still looks livable and comfortable. I would be curious what some of you actually like? Give some examples.

ok, i admit that i love to watch Flip or Flop because of Christina and Tarek's relationship. both pre- and post-divorce, they are such a mess. so, yes, their houses all look the same, but i watch for the dysfunction.

fight over that tile that alllll looks the same but actually represents the power in your relationship, my pretties.

surprisingly, the show that has given at least some change in style house to house, episode to episode, is the one from Arkansas, Fixer to Fabulous. but i would bet that it's going to go bad very soon because i can see Walmart jumping on them since Target has other designers. once that happens, they'll start pushing the same look house to house because that's what they'll be selling.

also, i'm surprised that Discovery Plus and Target have gone all in with Chip Gaines. i'm sure that they have their pr statements ready for when he has his inevitable political/religious public meltdown.

All these reality shows are filming without masks. Get real if you think that’s some statement on their part.

They are probably tested out the Wazoo and tight protocols. Not perfect but the industry is employing a lot of people.

There a thread where all posted rooms that we liked and someone basically bashed every person’s taste.

Actually, they filmed the bulk of both seasons at once, which was pre-COVID. They filmed some filler and a couple projects during COVId. That’s why there’s a mix.

It’s most obvious in the episode with the couple who went to Africa. You can see footage of the warehouse sale used...that was in Season 1. Also, they flew to Africa.

Shea actually mentioned this in a YouTube video...that season 2 would come out quickly because it was almost all filmed with season 1.

I also wonder when we're going to get around to it not being ok to casually accuse men of being gay if they don't strictly conform to the US frat guy model of what it means to be a guy.

Just some underlying misogyny to unpack there.

This is what microphones are for. No excuse. There was one reveal scene filmed during the pandemic when she made a comment like “I wish I could hug you, but we have to keep 6 feet apart.” You’re in someone else’s house. Put on a damn mask. It’s not going to ruin your show.

I like what Erin/Ben Napier, Nicole Curtis, Genevieve Gorder, sometimes Good Bones, do. Restoration, not afraid of pattern/color. More sustainable, more considered design choices. Less about Instagram shots.

You are using the word misogyny incorrectly. Say homophobic.
