Also, there are lots of closeted gay men in that world and might her husband be one of them?

My first thought was the husband is gay.

I concur. My kids even said that, they're tweens.

I found the basketballers 22K SF mansion episode so odd. They showed a basketball court a bedroom and a "great room" and that was it. The interjection of their children is super inappropriate and those segments are awkward and boring. I found it crazy that the family seemed happy to move into a 100% done detailed home....didnt they have any personal art or mementos? Like, she styled each bookcase and they just showed up? Felt like a lovely AirBNB, not a home.

Just some underlying misogyny to unpack there.

You are using the word misogyny incorrectly. Say homophobic.

No. You don’t get it.

When you make feminine qualities in a man something that are somehow embarrassing, to be avoided, a sign you are gay if you have a wife and kids.

When the worst thing a boy or man can do is have feminine qualities (ie toxic masculinity). Yet girls are encouraged all day long to have stereotypically male qualities and in fact it’s celebrated.

At the root of all that is a dislike of women and traditionally feminine qualities.

You assume I think being gay is something bad or to be avoided. I don't. I do think that covert homosexuality IS viewed as bad or embarassing in the mormon faith, so closeted mormon men is a thing.

Exactly this. WTF are these (probably single/divorced) nasty people on this thread saying he’s gay going on abt? god just bc your marriage is a failure or you couldn’t get someone to settle for your ass doesn’t mean everyone is secretly unhappy.

And not he show...to all the haters saying it’s all the same.....uh yea. that’s the point duh. people are hiring SHEA for the MCGEE look. That’s what the Fing want. How did you not pick up on that? You might think it’s all the same but that’s literally what people are requesting bc they LIKE IT.

Stop hating this woman for being more successful than you are.

Let’s take the temperature down a notch. It’s a show about decorating.

They don’t yes they get style they want her name, she has no style. And most decent interior designers take what there clients want into consideration. She ignores/overrides her client all of the time

She is an influencer, who became InstaFamous and partnered with Target. She parlayed that into op ending a large design studio that helps push her brands. She creates content and marketing. There is nothing original about her designs, other than the fact that her name is on it.

That’s just staging. On all these shows, the designers stage the homes (usually with much of their own brand’s furniture/decor) for the reveal. Once the cameras are gone, they move it all out and the family moves their stuff in. In some cases, they purchase pieces from the designer to stay.

The pillows were so much better than I thought they were going to be. I hope after the show the homeowner bought some inserts off Amazon and put them on her bed. They would look fine in that very plain room.

I thought the kitchen renovation in the 1908 house was really nice and reflected the home well.

I think they are going to get divorced. There was so much tension and she seems obviously annoyed by him and his inappropriate comments.

She could have used the pillows. They were pretty - and worst case scenario she could have layered them in. I did like the 1908 kitchen - but there white was appropriate. Every time she paints a cedar ceiling, the heart of a millworker dies.

I just watched the second season. I agree with the others who said that she uses too much white. She has a style that works and people seem to like it, so I guess people who seek her out are satisfied. That said, I was enraged about the pillows. They easily could have been used in the room. The final room was fine, but I didn't get Hawaiian paradise from it.

Who cares? It’s a tv show and people can speculate all the want. That’s the entertainment biz. People are entitled to an opinion - on the style, the houses, their personalities, and yes, even their marriage, which is part of the show like on Fixer Upper, Flip or Flop, or the twins on Property Brothers. They chose to discuss their marriage on the show and bring their kids on it for the extra appeal, and the flip side of that is going to be speculation and chatter. They could have not gone on tv, or not spoken about their marriage or kids.

Why your tweens are speculating about someone’s sexuality with you is a direct reflection of your parenting and values. It’s a show about decorating, who cares about the private lives of people you don’t know?

The idea that a man with a so-called “effeminate” voice or “gay” voice must be a closeted homosexual is really outdated. This is an interesting short doc that features a linguist who explains how language and voice develops. Educate yourselves.

It has very little to do with mannerisms and everything to do with how they react to and interact with the opposite sex. I knew several guys growing up who had zero feminine mannerisms, and when they “came out” later, we all said “well, yeah.” I assumed that they assumed we all knew. Gay people talk about having “gaydar,” but it’s really just being observant.

That would apply here if anyone commenting knew the man in real life. They don’t. They’re calling him gay from a TV show.

Eh, I think drag culture is arguably minstrel misogyny - it’s mocking and degrading women. Here, her husband isn’t effeminate - he’s just very California and doesn’t fit it in outdoorsy Utah and has no practical construction know-how. So, it is incorrect to use dislike of McGhee or the lack of sexual chemistry with his spouse as an example of misogyny. It isn’t. It might be homophobic- b/c there is an implication that being gay is less than.

So he’s being accused of being gay because he isn’t in construction and not outdoorsy enough (???). But this is no commentary on his masculinity. Mmkay.

It is not negative commentary on women or womenhood - thus, not misogyny...yikes.

Misogyny is contempt of women.

Men in this country are told over and over from the time they are young boys that stereotypical feminine qualities, interests, tendencies (like being too emotional) are not "cool" (if they're lucky) or they're told it's flat out not allowed for them. Why is this the worst thing a guy could be? Contempt of women. We as women internalize it too.

Assuming any man who doesn't conform to male standards is gay, which happens regularly, is not some objective fact check devoid of meaning. Please. It's a school yard way of taking him down a notch. It's a socially acceptable way to call out a guy who doesn't seem masculine enough for you. Internalized misogyny.

Nope. That’s homophobia. Very different.

Some of you are damn dense.

This previous poster explained it pretty well too.

I think the show is entertaining and I like her style for the most part - I have a few of the target line items and have visited her SoCal shop. I was glad she has a show because I think the tips and watching the decision-making process helps me in making my own home decorating choices. I like taking more risks with color on textiles, walls etc. but in terms of mixing hardware, mixing furniture styles, how to pair wood tones, artwork and furniture placement and getting a cohesive flow to your home - the show is fun to watch for that type of stuff. One of my fav design shows from back in the day was Candice Olson's show on HGTV.
