OP here. What’d you find? I found some amazing vintage school desks on eBay, but nothing that doesn’t cost an additional $300 in shipping.

We did something like this (not pink) for $225 including shipping. It's actually very nice. My kid is 6, so she's easy to please.

We bought the same thing back in June! My rising kindergartener loves it. I only paid $140, its crappy that they upped the price.

People recommending IKEA things:

Take a look at the website! EVERYTHING is out of stock!

EVERYONE is trying to create a nice learning distance set up for their kids right now, but some people started earlier than OP (and me!) and bought everything.

We ended up getting this little black metal desk from Home Depot
https://www.homedepot.com/p/OneSpace-30-in-Rectangular-Black-Computer-Desk-with-Keyboard-Tray-50-1001/302997522?cm_mmc=ecc-_-THD_SHIP_CONFIRMATION-_-V1_M1_CA-_-Product_URL&ecc_ord=WM14635413

Is it ideal for our decor? No.
But we can make it work for his distance learning, which is (hopefully) temporary.

With IKEA you have to stalk the site and call their 800 number. They get stock all the time. You may have to wait a week or two for things to be replenished. I would also not order IKEA online ever. I believe their delivery times are now sometime in October. If you really want the IKEA stuff you need to go to the warehouse and get it yourself. I just got both of my kids desks from IKEA. They are just fine and will do the job. Added bonus...they are huge. For what it’s worth, my kids are eighth grade and high school.

But the Ikea website tells you how many of any given item are in stock at your local store--are you saying it's often very wrong? That it will say there are zero in stock, but really they have some?

We hired a closet company to build a very simple desk with drawers. VEry affordable and perfect for the situation. DS needs a big uncluttered desk space to be able to focus....

Thanks, I actually have been looking for any kind of table. I will say, I’ve found plenty of high end designs that are beautiful but they cost upwards of $1500. Given that my kid just destroyed something else in his room, I’m not willing to buy him a beautiful piece of furniture, but I want something that isn’t a piece of garbage that makes the whole room feel gross.
Could you tell me how tall your vanity table is? Wouldn’t that still be 30” generally like my actual vanity in my room? Crate & Barrel used to have an adjustable table, but now it looks like the large one only is available.

I dunno, if you allow your kid to destroy things, does he deserve something nice?

I have a million International Concepts pieces which I have finished or painted. DD is using a sofa table as a DL desk but I found this one for you, 25 in. H x 24 in. W x 22 in. L: https://www.homedepot.com/p/International-Concepts-Java-Unfinished-End-Table-OT-60E/204737233#product-overview

There’s an Amish store called Lamm Brothers unfinished furniture out near Charlottesville. You could buy something and stain it yourself.

This is what I was told by the IKEA customer service. The website and the app lag. So their numbers are often wrong. You really need to call the 800 number tell them which IKEA you were going to and give them the product number. They will be able to tell you if there were actually any in stock or not. I did this for both of my kids desks. Of course, I got one desk in college park and one desk in Baltimore. The one I got an College Park, I just happen to hit a day when the app and the website both said the same thing. I called up and the app and the website were correct. there were 27 of the item that I wanted. I got there, and even though I had to wait in a long line outside, I was able to get two of the dressers that I needed for the desk. Well worth it as my kids are older and those small desks I’ve seen online that are way more money just weren’t going work for us.

The other thing I was told was that if there are three or less of a product on the shelf you must show up to get it. Even if it allows you to do curbside pick up you can’t trust it to be available.

Two saw horses and a piece of plywood. Done.

Maybe I am smug. Okay, sure I am smug. But why are you all buying this now, and not in April? Have your kids not been at a desk so far?

I'm not smug, but plenty perplexed. My FB feed is full of moms showing off elaborate, brand new DL set-ups. I did that in March?

Well, my one very stubborn kid fought me like crazy on buying a desk. He wanted to sit on the couch with a card table. He finally gave in and I was able to buy the desk. My middle school child has a desk that’s part of her furniture. However it’s very very small… Think little kids desk. She had been looking online for a desk and I had to convince her to get some thing that wasn’t going to cost me $700. Started our serious looking in mid July and as of last week have desks and new comfortable chairs for both kids to sit in. NoW I don’t have kids in my kitchen, dining room and family room sprawled out with their work everywhere.

This desk is a knock off of the Vivo desk we bought for about $150 - there are dozens of versions of this desk on Amazon and Wayfair for anywhere between $100-$200. It's a great desk - really sturdy, and super adjustable. It's not pretty, but personally I prefer form (and ergonomics) over function.

OP here. Funny, seeing this desk over and over in my search is what’s leaving me so frustrated. I want something that is simple and well made, not a plastic Disney version of something. Different strokes and all that, but this isn’t for me.
I might go with that play table C&B has, but that’s also not ideal.

I think my taste is too high for my means, lol. These are my picks that I either can’t get or can’t afford:

This thing ships in 6-8 weeks:
https://sprout-kids.com/products/wooden-kids-table-and-chairs-pkt2c001

Can’t get this in America:

Might get something like this and try to find a comfy chair:

Truly, America is devoid of any good and simple design. Good, quality items shouldn’t be out of reach for common people. Ugh.

Just move to Scandinavia then. Why don't you ask your child what he/she wants and then look to buy something that is going to be comfortable? The first two don't look comfortable at all, your poor child will be sitting there all day, they need something that works for THEM, not what looks pretty in your house. People like you are insufferable.
