| What sucks is that I would be willing to invest in our neighborhood’s (private) pool if we were actual members and had invested in the community there. We are new to the neighborhood and rented a membership back in February. Now we have no idea what is going to happen to the (many) renters who already paid in full for the season. If the pool closes but still has to pay carrying costs, it really sucks to be a first-time renter shouldering those costs and literally not have gotten to use the pool one time for our money. |
Those are the phase 1 guidelines- although the 10 people does not include lifeguards. Its no furniture and only 10 people for lap swimming only, 1 swimmer per lane. I don't feel like searching for it right now- but you can find the guidance fairly easily on the governor's web page. No, I don't think many will open under Phase 1 conditions- but I don't expect to be in Phase 1 for long. Gov said 2-4 weeks per phase. |
We aren't far from Newington Forest (pretty close actually). We heard during our board meeting that they aren't opening. We are not an HOA pool, but rather a private club. We will be opening for lap swim under Phase 1, one person per lane, nobody on deck, so no furniture usage. I'm aware of 3 nearby planning to open for lap swim and one that is not (in addition to NF) and one that is closed for the entire summer. |
And yet beaches can open this weekend. Makes sense, huh? |
| Fairfax and PWC pools and splash pads are closed for the year too. |
I can understand why these places have to remained closed. You can't control how many people show up on a given day. I've been to that Special Harbor place and the line to get in was crazy. No way could you have social distancing while waiting in line or while in there without severely limiting capacity. And how would people know they are close to capacity before getting there? It would result in a ton of people trying to get there right when it opens. I've also been to one of the public pools closer to Arlington that has a big water slide (I forget the name) and it was similarly crowded. For private clubs and HOA pools, there is a membership database. It's a lot easier to control who comes and when. I am hoping my pool sets something up where we have certain days/times we can sign up for in phase 1 and phase 2. We could bring our own chairs from home. But they may decide it's just too hard for the people who would be in charge of implementing it. I hope someone on my pool's board is representing the interests of those with young kids who would jump through a lot of hoops to be able to get to the pool even a little bit. I worry that if it's a bunch of older people they will say why bother and just keep it closed. The board is not soliciting input from us at this time. |
| We will - we have plenty of deck space and will follow all guidelines and then some. |
Where are you located? In Virginia decks cannot be used during Phase 1. Pools can be used for lap swim. |
It sounds like a lot of pools aren’t confident that we’ll be in phase two before pool season is already over, hence the cancellation of the entire season. If we enter phase one right after Memorial Day but phase two doesn’t happen until, say, mid-July, that’s much of the season gone. Even worse if we hit phase 1 June 10th to go along with DC. They might decide it doesn’t make sense to open for a few weeks. Not exactly a pool, but my DS was invited to a birthday party in June at a kids indoor play place/kids gym. And they are now contacting parents to reschedule June parties - and some July parties because of all the previous re-scheduled parties - because they don’t think they can be open during phase 1. |
I am on the board of my brother Virginia private pool, and rest assured board members have the same concerns and wishes that you do: We all want to be at the pool, but in a safe manner. We also need to justify the huge expense that has a pool membership fee. All the pool management companies are recommending sign-up registration for members to come as you suggested above. This is complicated and will require your teen employees to regulate and enforce. I have huge sympathy for those lifeguards who will have members breathing down their necks all day about their registered alloyed time 🤨 |
Another board member here. We don’t anticipate our members “breathing down necks”. They are pretty docile. Just in case, we will have board members assisting, but we do that for the first two weekends during normally summers anyhow. |
| Our HOA pool is ready to open. They are going to take reservations for lap swimming for phase 1 and have lifeguards and staff hired and ready for Phase 2. |
Same with ours. I’ve already signed up the kids for lap swimming the first week. |
Nice. Thumbs up! Fairfax County Supervisor Herrity posted this tonight. I wonder if it applies to outdoor pools? It seems to me like it should, but will it? Emergency Proposal to Enter Phase One GOOD NEWS: On Thursday, The Board will consider an Emergency Ordinance proposal that would permit restaurants and exercise facilities to open outdoors pursuant to Phase One Guidelines. This proposal would allow outdoor dining and fitness and exercise activities at 50% of the permitted interior occupancy. More information to come soon. |
but isn't NOVA supposed to enter Phase 1 Friday anyway? So this is just one day earlier, hard to see how it makes any difference. |
