Summer Swim Canceled

Anonymous
Here is a copy of the message from the ODSL. Sad, but the decision making is sound, and they lay out all of the reasons why there will be no swimmer swim this year for anyone.

Dear ODSL Swimmers & Parents, It is with deep regret that I inform you that we will not hold ODSL Sanctioned meets this summer. We arrived at this decision on Friday May 1st during a WebEx call where a majority of the team representatives who were on the call voted to cancel the 2020 Season. Over the past couple of weeks, the ODSL Board have been reviewing the most up to-date information provided by Virginia Department of Health, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Governor Northam’s Phased Reopening Plan. A few things became clear. 1-Social distancing guidelines are here to stay. 2-Face masks are a recommendation 3-Group size limitations. The current limit is a group size of 10 people, this could be increased but not enough to conduct a swim meet. 4-This virus KILLS (although the percent to total population is relatively small) 5-The way that this virus is spread is not conducive to conducting a swim meet • Respiratory Transmission (how many of our swimmers whether sick or not cough, sneeze in the team area) • Contact transmission. (Think about the amount of paper and items that we all must handle timer sheets, stop watches, DQ slips pens, pencils…etc. that would have to be sanitized prior to handing off to another person) 6-Putting 1 of our 3200 swimmers and 6000 parents at risk of catching this horrible virus far outweighs the benefit of conducting summer swim meets which, currently, we ALL need. On behalf of the ODSL Board please stay safe, keep your families safe and we will come back stronger and better in 2021.

+1. Is this the real letter? I’m not sure I believe it.

Indeed it is. Check out the Team Feed in the upper left hand corner of the home page:

I agree that it is a real letter, but I don't agree that the reasoning is sound.
For one thing- it appears totally stuck on two things 1) how they are used to doing swim meets, and 2) how current conditions are (as compared to conditions in 6 weeks.)
ODSL does things very differently than the NVSL- all their meets are a version of 'b' meets. Each swimmer is allowed to do up to 3 events plus either an IM or a relay- and they do tons and tons of heats. So they take FOREVER, and there are masses of people.

I don't know if it is going to be feasible to have a competitive swim season this summer or not- and it breaks my heart to think it might not happen- but this decision is super premature.
Obviously- we are not going to get there with no grouping larger than 10. Probably not with no grouping larger than 50- but maybe with groups of 100-- its partly in how you define groups. You could jettison the 3 timers per lane, and go with just 1 timer per lane. You could not share stop watches or pencils- not sharing those seems downright easy. You could have the card carriers wear gloves. You could do a 'boys meet' and a 'girls meet'. There are probably others things to do as well.

Here in VA, I don’t see our Governor going from gatherings of no more than 10 to gatherings of 100 or less anytime soon. It’s May, and we haven’t even entered Phase 1. What you are suggesting is in Phase 3. Social distancing, masks, and small gathering will be required this summer, which is not compatible with summer swim. Honestly, I think it’s 50/50 that the pools will even open.

And there’s a minimum of 14
Days between phases, right?

Does anyone know what went down at the NVSL meeting today?

Their board meets this afternoon

Hopefully they won’t make a final decision today.

There are a few teams making a strong push for canceling altogether. The vast majority have been quiet.

Is it clear why they are pushing to cancel completely right now?

I think those pools in NVSL wanting you scrap are not in good financial situations and want to know yes or no. I wish NVSL could figure out how to modify but the insurance is the tough part.

Maybe those pools should decide to not participate this year and not pressure the nvsl to make a hasty decision on behalf of the rest.

Take for example a swim club that has already decided to not open this summer. If a nearby club opens and there is some type of competitive swim team season the cub that isn’t opening stands to lose members to the others.

Our swim league (MD) had a meeting with our team reps last night. We haven't canceled the season yet, but we are going to meet again in a few weeks once additional information is available from state/local authorities. What options are being considered for NVSL?

Everything and anything although they are pretty much set on no normal season. Virtual “postal” meets, a reduced season if they can get it in during July, pretty much a bunch of options depending on what happens. They may have a better idea after Governor Northman’s press conference on Monday. There is some thought (rumor?) he may mix all youth sports for the summer, but we will see. Other than that they could see what into comes out between now and Memorial Day.

Guessing mix is autocorrect for nix. That would seem unfair, why punish the kids?

How are these decisions interpreted as punishing kids?
