This is one of the stupidest things I have ever read on DCUM, and there is a lot of stupidity on here. FCPS is "White: 58.9%; Hispanic/ Latino: 17.1%; Black/African American: 12.5%; Asian: 5.5%; two or more races: 5.5%; American Indian/Alaskan Native: 0.3%; Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian: 0.2%. " MCPS is "African American: 23.4% American Indian: 0.3% Asian American: 15.7% Hispanic: 23.4% White: 37.2%" You made it sound like FCPS is 99% white.... Looking around the state, Garrett County Public Schools is 98% white. Carroll County is 92%. Allegheny, Cecil, Queen Anne and Washington are also up there ahead of FCPS. And if you are so adamant that the high white population is what caused a problem, why not send your kids to PG County Schools, where there are only 23% white kids? Oh right. Because the education there sucks... Your anectodal story is from " many many years ago." But just last year, in Anne Arundel County, In Montgomery County, someone hung a noose in the courtyard of a middle school. In MCPS, a 13-year-old Jewish girl received several anti-Semitic texts. They said, among other things, “JNTD” — an acronym for Jews Need to Die.... But yes, your one anecdotal story about someone pointing out your Asian features 38 years ago is ABSOLUTELY a reason to shun the entire county and its people and schools. You must be so fun at parties.

I kind of feel like antagonizing you two with the debate about whether Asian counts as a POC (Here's a thread...https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/761688.page) LOL. The consensus is basically no, so quit making yourself out to be the victim. |
Hey, y'all, DCUM voted and decided that people with an ethnic heritage in Asia aren't minorities! So there's no such thing as bigotry against people with an ethnic heritage in Asia! Problem solved, yay! |
| I know a lot of really great MCPS teachers who could afford to live in Montgomery County but chose Frederick for the schools. This speaks volumes for me. |
And I know a lot of MCPS teachers who send their own children to MCPS, so that balances it out. |
Not really.... Plenty of people have their kids go where they work, that's just to facilitate easy coordination of school days.... But for these parents to choose Frederick over Montgomery, and they teach in Montgomery, and they *could* afford to live where it's "nicer" (ew, I would die if I had to drive 270), that shows something poignant. |
If these teachers who have kids in MCPS thought the schools were that bad, don't you think they would move further out to Frederick, where it's *much* cheaper and have their kids go to a better school? You think these teachers, knowing how the schools are, would sacrifice their kids' education, but the teachers *you* want better for their kids? Ok. Your reality is true, and mine is made up... in your mind. |
| ^" but the teachers *you* KNOW want better for their kids? |
What is poignant about MCPS teachers living in Frederick County even though they have enough money to live somewhere in Montgomery County? I must be missing something here. |
And conversely, I know a lot of FCPS teachers would prefer Mongomery. |
I was the poster above and I’m not Asian. I do have a gay child and many gay friends so I know about these anti-Asian attitudes. |
^PP is insinuating that they think Frederick schools are better and that's why they live there so their kids can go there even though they could afford MoCo. I would seriously question where in MoCo can this teacher afford to live. Is all of MCPS great? Of course not. Just as I am sure not all of FCPS is great. But since Frederick county is a heck of a lot cheaper than MoCo, teachers can probably afford to live in the very nice parts of Frederick which usually equates to the better schools whereas a teacher could not afford to live in Bethesda or Potomac and send their kids to Whitman or Churchill. The best of FCPS no doubt is better than some of the lower performing MCPS schools, but a blanket statement of "FCPS is better than MCPS" is ridiculous. |
I remember that thread, and I don't recall there being a consensus, and certainly, I, as an Asian American, don't think of myself as white. And I'm pretty sure most white people don't see me as white, either. |
Whoah. Seems to me that I've hit a nerve by sharing my past experience and by voicing my opinion. Sorry but won't be taking anything that I said back. Just because something discriminatory happened to me 20 years ago, doesn't make it any less discriminatory, doesn't it; but it sounds to me like you're telling me that it doesn't count because it happened many years ago. You wouldn't tell that to a black person or or even a Jewish person, would you? That would be a bit effed up. And YES, the schools I researched were not diverse enough for me. The only options that we were open to based on the neighborhoods we were researching were Urbana HS, Oakdale, or Linganore. I won't bother to post the full demographic profile of all 3 here but anyone can look it up. All 3 schools have 5% black students and the white student population is something like 80% with the exception of Urbana which is at 67%. For some that might be cool, but I'm personally not comfortable with that given how important it is for me and my husband (who is half black) that our kids go to diverse schools. And I never said that my experience (thanks btw for demoting it to just someone pointing out my Asian features) was the sole reason for not choosing FCPS as you claimed. I said that the lack of diversity at these schools COMBINED with my past experience made me uncomfortable about sending my kids there. FYI- my kids go to a school w/ 25% white kids and the school doesn't suck. You really need to take a chill pill. |
Wow is all I can say. Asian person here. I personally don't give a sh*t what DCUM posters say about whether or not an Asian person is a POC (most educated people would know they are) but the ignorance in your post is shameful. In your mind I'm not a POC so my experience doesn't count. Only the experience of Black people or Hispanic people count. Got it. Watch out now, your true colors are showing. |
