Many many years ago as a 23 year old, I went to visit Frederick and I literally had a man in the middle of the street say to me, "Go back to Japan," while his friends laughed. Given the lack of diversity in FCPS schools, I'm not at a place where I'm comfortable sending my kids there.
This is one of the stupidest things I have ever read on DCUM, and there is a lot of stupidity on here. FCPS is "White: 58.9%; Hispanic/ Latino: 17.1%; Black/African American: 12.5%; Asian: 5.5%; two or more races: 5.5%; American Indian/Alaskan Native: 0.3%; Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian: 0.2%. " MCPS is "African American: 23.4% American Indian: 0.3% Asian American: 15.7% Hispanic: 23.4% White: 37.2%" You made it sound like FCPS is 99% white.... Looking around the state, Garrett County Public Schools is 98% white. Carroll County is 92%. Allegheny, Cecil, Queen Anne and Washington are also up there ahead of FCPS. And if you are so adamant that the high white population is what caused a problem, why not send your kids to PG County Schools, where there are only 23% white kids? Oh right. Because the education there sucks... Your anectodal story is from " many many years ago." But just last year, in Anne Arundel County, In Montgomery County, someone hung a noose in the courtyard of a middle school. In MCPS, a 13-year-old Jewish girl received several anti-Semitic texts. They said, among other things, “JNTD” — an acronym for Jews Need to Die.... But yes, your one anecdotal story about someone pointing out your Asian features 38 years ago is ABSOLUTELY a reason to shun the entire county and its schools. You must be so fun at parties.
Whoah. Seems to me that I've hit a nerve by sharing my past experience and by voicing my opinion. Sorry but won't be taking anything that I said back. Just because something discriminatory happened to me 20 years ago, doesn't make it any less discriminatory, doesn't it; but it sounds to me like you're telling me that it doesn't count because it happened many years ago. You wouldn't tell that to a black person or or even a Jewish person, would you? That would be a bit effed up. And YES, the schools I researched were not diverse enough for me. The only options that we were open to based on the neighborhoods we were researching were Urbana HS, Oakdale, or Linganore. I won't bother to post the full demographic profile of all 3 here but anyone can look it up. All 3 schools have 5% black students and the white student population is something like 80% with the exception of Urbana which is at 67%. For some that might be cool, but I'm personally not comfortable with that given how important it is for me and my husband (who is half black) that our kids go to diverse schools. And I never said that my experience (thanks btw for demoting it to just someone pointing out my Asian features) was the sole reason for not choosing FCPS as you claimed. I said that the lack of diversity at these schools COMBINED with my past experience made me uncomfortable about sending my kids there. FYI- my kids go to a school w/ 25% white kids and the school doesn't suck. You really need to take a chill pill.
