If You Are A Maryland Democrat Contemplating A Vote For Hogan, Read This First:

Kirwan Commission. Those 2 words is all I have to say. Any parent at MCPS who is at all concerned with overcrowding and the lack of resources at our schools should absolutely read up on it and how it will impact MOCO.

In MD, I'd say about 50-55% (out of the 70%) of the centrists lean left and identify more with the Democrats or Independents and about 15-20% lean right. I note that the most popular governors in the nation right now are Republicans in deep blue states. To me, this is because the only Republicans who can get elected in blue states are moderate Republicans. It used to be that such Republicans were very mainstream, but now the party has moved so far right (to be fair, the Democratic party has move farther left, too) that these moderates don't really identify with their party any more. They are called RINO's and are attacked from the right for caving to the Democrats. But in point of fact, they are moderate and centrist and what the nation and states want right now.

Hogan is the second most popular governor. He is behind Charlie Baker who is also a Republican in a heavily Democratic state. In fact 3 of the top 4 and 5 of the top 10 most popular governors in the US are Republicans in heavily blue states. I think that the US is slowly getting fed up with the heavily partisan politics. The last two years has pushed extremist behavior over the top. I think we're going to see a wave of cross party candidates (Republicans in blue states and Democrats in red states) winning the elections as the country starts swinging back towards the middle. And I think that Jealous has no chance of winning MD.

I agree, and I am a. Democrat. Jealous seems entirely unaware of the constraints of governing in a state that already among the highest taxed in the country.

Up until this morning, I was set to cast my vote in November for Gov. Larry Hogan. That is, until I read this interview Hogan gave to the NYT.

In short, Hogan's responses to many key and fundamental questions about the current administration are...bone chilling. These are softball questions, that Hogan flat-out missed. It's a bit un-nerving.

I don't weigh-in very often on these forums, unless I have something significant and worth your time. This is >> https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/04/opinion/sunday/republicans-donald-trump-larry-hogan.html

This article only solidifies why I will be voting for Hogan. He is placing the wants and needs of Marylanders first. He does not want to waste time being consume about Trump and other issues in Washington that have nothing to do with Maryland. I am glad that he takes the high road instead of drowning into divisive politics like other politicians. Our state needs someone who has the ability to work down both sides of the aisle without loosing focus on what really matters to Marylanders. Hogan is not going to allow Democrat or Republican extremists to inject him with their division. This is what I like about him.

I’m a democrat but there is nothing in the world that would make me vote for a Berniecrat.

Then you aren’t a Dem. Sorry you’re such a corporate shill.

Perfect example of why the far left can’t win general elections.

I'm a guy, so drama king?

Let's leave the name-calling to the POTUS. We can be adults, here.

I hope you were able to read the op ed interview.

OP, dude, whatever you are, drama queen is an ancient and gender neutral term for highly excitable and paranoid people who make mountains out of molehills. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histrionic_personality_disorder

I know you're hyperpartisan so I can dismiss your threads easily as meaningless irrelevant babble rather than a serious discussion over the merits of voting for Hogan or Jealous.

Agree. I’m the person being accused of not being a dem. Do dems now have to be socialists?

Jesus would never run as a republican since he believes in feeding the hungry and taking care of the sick and welcoming immigrants

OP you just cherry picked out pieces of this. As a whole the interview makes clear he is no Trump fan, that he focuses on doing what is best for MD which is his job and that he has in various ways disagreed with the president.

I am a moderate Dem, can’t stand the President, voted for Hogan the first time around and would do so in a heartbeat again. If you are pretty a progressive Dem you won’t ever like him but there actually are lots of moderates Dems in the state too - as evidenced by his election the first time.

Could you please see a few words ABOUT those 2 words? What is it, what effect do you think it will have on MCPS, and why?

My friend have you not read any of the prior posts? You can also go online to read the report. The commission will take funds from MoCo, Howard an another county to redistribute educational funds to Baltimore, Carroll county and other poorer counties. This in turn will cause major deficits for those of us up here and our children in the public system.

It's funny that everyone here hates the Kerwin commission, when mccpta who represents PTA and parents are for the Kerwin commission. Hogan has cut funds to mcps time and time again (sometimes the Democratic legislature has been able to get some back). He doesn't believe in equal rights for homosexuals. He believes in less government, except when it comes to women's bodies. And remember that redistricting happens in 2020.

I'm hoping people will come to their senses, Hogan is not good for Maryland. Hogan is good for wealthy white men. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool.

Can people please explain why the Kirwan Commission would be so awful? I skimmed the "essential" goals and they all seem pretty positive - like universal pre-k for 4 year olds.

Can you be more specific? MD was the first state in the country to legalize gay marriage at the ballot box.

What has Hogan done to govern womens' bodies?

Good, we need it. Last time around, the democrats gerrymandered so heavily that it's the subject of a Supreme Court case:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2018/03/28/how-maryland-democrats-pulled-off-their-aggressive-gerrymander/?utm_term=.7af86723541f

Look at MD-6 -- it stretches from Bethesda to Cumberland and the West Virginia border -- a 3-hour drive. That was done to bring in more Dem voters in MoCo to kick out the Republican in the panhandle of MD.
