Are we conflating 2 different individuals? The kid from the linked CNN story also got picked up on the NYT. His scores are higher than 32 on the ACT:

"What did it take? Mr. Brown had a 4.68 grade point average when he applied to college, an SAT score of 1540 out of 1600 and an ACT score of 34 out of 36. He was on the school debate team, had done internships and was part of school activities like Key Club." https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/01/us/college-acceptance-micheal-brown.html

Yes, two friends. In the CNN article they're pictured together.

So the kids in the CNN article and NYT with the higher scores got into Standford, HYP, etc.? Where did the friend with the ACT score of 32 get into? Any links?

The CNN and NYT featured boy has high stats, got into 20 of 20. The friend, cited by OP, has lower stats, went 12 of 12. Both got into HYPS.

Saying you hit a home rung when you started on third is no achievement.

Systematically denigrating the achievements of white and Asian kids who work their butts off in order to benefit black and Hispanic kids from relatively privileged backgrounds elevates politics over merit.

If you started on third it’s a yawner, not an achievement.

Huh. My son had very similar ECs to these kids’ acitivities of Key Club, student government, mock trail, and debate and he was derided here as being “boring” “there’s nothing that makes him stand out” “you’re gonna need a lot more than that for Ivies”...lots of comments like that.

Yeah the Ivies specifically seek out kids that are humble and don't feel entitled to an Ivy league education. Not saying it was the case in PPP's situation but that is a trend that I've noticed.

What? My kid didn’t applie to any Ivies. His grades and scores and ECs were almost identical to these kids’ but we were told he had no chance.

And how do you tell that my kid has silver spoon in his mouth? Is it.because of his RACE? Guess what, you are a RACIST.

BTW, I don't have a kid applying this year.

If you tell me what race I'll answer the question.

The black kid with the 1540 was probably one of the top 10 AA kids in the country stats wise. He's going to get in anywhere he applies.

Because your white, multiple EC, great test score kid is a dime a dozen. Sorry but true. They have plenty of those in the class.
