Are we conflating 2 different individuals? The kid from the linked CNN story also got picked up on the NYT. His scores are higher than 32 on the ACT:

So the kids in the CNN article and NYT with the higher scores got into Standford, HYP, etc.? Where did the friend with the ACT score of 32 get into? Any links?

The CNN and NYT featured boy has high stats, got into 20 of 20. The friend, cited by OP, has lower stats, went 12 of 12. Both got into HYPS.

Yeah the Ivies specifically seek out kids that are humble and don't feel entitled to an Ivy league education. Not saying it was the case in PPP's situation but that is a trend that I've noticed.

What? My kid didn’t applie to any Ivies. His grades and scores and ECs were almost identical to these kids’ but we were told he had no chance.

The black kid with the 1540 was probably one of the top 10 AA kids in the country stats wise. He's going to get in anywhere he applies.
