I agree, but shotgunning apps out to schools with no intention of attending is not cool. Nor is hogging scholarships you don't need, which will change the life of other teens. Very unsettling behavior. I read apps during grad school and I can assure you many AOs will be looking unfavorably at this high school moving forward.

We don't know if he got a full scholarship, or a combination of grants and loans. No reason he shouldn't try for the best scholarships to the best colleges. He's breaking no rules here -- and AOs will be calling the high school to see if they have any more students like him.

His GPA is backed up by strong AP test results and also SAT2 scores.

Those scores are not even 50%tile for top performing Asian/white kids.

For low SES his scores are great.

Low SES Asian kids will beat that score EASY but still no Stanford, Harvard, or P.

What is wrong with you people? There is more to an application than test scores. He's in the ballpark for consideration, after that you need to be an interesting kid.

Also these schools are responding to what students who go to these schools want and that is diversity. If you don't want diversity then don't apply to top schools. Very simple.

I don't think the poster is saying that. All this post is about is collecting. Once your first choice makes you an offer you want to take, it is time to stop making it a contest.

He didn't get into Stanford or HYP ....

He and his classmate wasted countless man-hours at 11 and 19 colleges, respectively. Plus all the various scholarship committees. Then put other peers' futures in limbo (temporarily) holding these seats and scholarships they don't need. Emblematic of the degradation of American culture, as we lurch towards a narcissist-led low-trust society.

Yes he did. OP is just the teen's original post last November before decisions. The thread has updates throughout then they were on CNN. He got into HYPS, 11 of 11 at the top colleges in the US. His classmate got into 20 of 20.

Seeming Gates when applicant was awarded full FA was one objection. Fine to want the recognition even if you do it need the money. That’s the Rhodes analogy.

Generally agree wrt stop collecting admits once you get your first choice BUT, especially in the case of an immigrant family, first choice may not be clear. And, of course, lots of decisions come simultaneously.

I was using the post of schools listed on this thread. Thanks for link. Why did the moderator shutdown the college confidential thread?

Almost every kid, no ALL kids, at a school like TJ will score higher than this kid on ALL fronts. But only a handful get these kind of offers. Shame! We are supposed to be a merit-based society. Wonder when that changed..

Not just Gates, read he applied for a few of the most prominent full rides. Sorry, family can't play naive when he got into all these schools and filled out all these scholarship apps, and he's a prolific poster of various college admissions forums. Everyone knows Harvard is a full ride for low income. It was obvious watching this through November he (and his classmate) were doing this for bragging rights and to then leak to the press.

LOL @ merit based society. You 7?

Well. This is what society has created. Not sure how it really differs from many on DCUM to be honest. Except they’re mostly not from Nigeria or Kenya?
