Dcps 2 hour delay

DCPS twitter now says student absences will be excused today

Just came back inside. The sidewalks have not been treated and are very slippery in Adams Morgan. I am not having my child walk half a mile to take the metro under these conditions. Did not see one single 42 bus pass by for over 10 minutes. They usually run every few minutes during rush hour.

Huh? This happens quite frequently in the suburban school districts in the winter. What exactly is silly?

We live in Fairfax and a two hour delay starts the day at 11:15. One of my kids had lunch at 11:30. It does feel silly.

I'm always surprised when DCPS doesn't close-with so many kids walking and taking public transportation to school, it seems like bad weather esp sleet like this would making walking pretty treacherous.

I remember when I used to teach for DCPS. A few days after they made the call to open on a day like today, I met a former student who had just had a cast placed. She had slipped on the ice going to school and broken a limb. As a chronic pedestrian, it can be really scary to walk 'even a little ways' when there's ice. I am curious about the rest of the week if it refreezes--could be worse walking conditions than today!

Who exactly made this stupid decision?

Yes D.C. Council web site:

'March 14, DCCouncil closed due to inclement weather'
But kids teachers have to schlepnin jist when the wind and snow picks up later? Dumb.

My child has a medical condition that makes falling a very serious matter. The sidewalks are icy, so she's staying home.

I'm a teacher who lives right in DC, but I have no car, a bad knee, and normally take two Metrobuses to get to my school (both on "moderate snow detour"). That's code for "wait endlessly in the cold for the bus to come."

I'm calling out. My TA texted me that none of my 16 kids are there.

Why would the kids be there? School is 2 hours late.

Because I work in a CBO (Pre-K Incentive Program). When DCPS is on delay, we open on time.

Super secret way for the Mayor to push the Charter walkability preference

Well, Creative Minds decided to stay closed. Any others?

Both my husband and I can work from home. I had already prepared a project to work on a robot today. We have s new car. Now my FH wants to drive the kids to school. Roads are a slushy mess and I can imagine what happens when car will hit the streets. We had no snow this year , this would have been just one snow day. I know in Minnesota prople do this every day, but we are not in Minnesota and people do not know how to drive in the snow in DC. WTF

I live across from a DCPS school and the yard had kids in it at 8am who's parents had to drop them and go to work. Kids with not enough outwear on... I know DCPS isn't a charity but come on. Some kids need a place to go.

This was a very stupid decision. I'm letting my kid have a snow day. My boss said don't bother coming in and I'm not making my kid go either.

Again, even short distances can be treacherous for walkers. Sometimes safer to drive than walk some of the sidewalks I've encountered as a pedestrian. Especially when people don't shovel or when the plows push up icy snowbanks, or black ice when refreeze occurs overnight.
