Our school had about 40 of 200 kids show. One of my students showed, and I'm glad the student did. Time for building relationships and one to one instruction pretty much. Two of my coworkers were in car accidents. unfortunately.
If I had to guess, budget conscious admins want staff to spend personal leave. Overall it is a substantial cost savings to force workers to take personal leave. Wish the city had done a better job clearing streets. I paid 40 to get to work today at a school that's 4 miles away, due to bus cancellations. |
At my kid's DC public school only about 100 of 400 students showed up. |
| I teach at a charter that was in school today - we had 30% of students present in my class. Some classes had only 10% present and I think the max was about 50% |
Agree about the street cleaning/plowing! Considering the limited amount of snow and what was expected Browser or DCPW should have done a much better job

I don't doubt that some kids don't eat much of their lunch. However, when I dropped my kid off at her EOTP school around 10:30, there was a kid inside asking the security guard whether they were serving breakfast today. Perhaps this kid had already had breakfast at home and just wanted a second breakfast at school, but I don't doubt that there are a significant proportion of kids who rely on schools for meals. I don't think that school necessarily needs to be open, but perhaps some of them still can serve meals when closed for inclement weather. |
Admin here, though not of a DCPS. This is definitely true. We follow DCPS so I don't make the decision, but when the schools decide to open and our staff don't come in, we're definitely happy to have them burn their leave on a day that we have fewer kids so that they're less able to use it when we're more fully attended. |
