Do white people get offended by the phrase "Cracker"?

How old are you and what kind of groups do you hang out with?

I've hear that term quite often and used it myself sometimes when I'm mad. I try not to nowadays because don't want my kids to pick up those words or traits. But I think it's still a commonly used term, at least for my generation.

lol, never heard of the term breeders. Too funny.

It's really not funny, though, is it? It's pretty disrespectful, reducing people to their reproductive capacity and nothing else. Not to mention, I'm pretty sure gays and lesbians have parents too. Would they call their own parents "breeders" to their face? I'd call the use of this term immature and emotionally stunted, but not funny.

i've heard pilgrims, crackers, beckies, pink toes all used to describe white people. i have tons of white friends as an AA and they are by no means offended by cracker in the least. now the gloves come off for being called white trash by another white person. oh also forgot george jefferson's favorite - WHITEY!

i remember from the george zimmerman trial, trayon martin's friend referring to zimmerman as a creepy cracker.

Same here. I'm AA and I never hear this word. I hear other phrases but not that one.

I probably shouldn't have phrased my previous post that way. (shouldn't have questioned your background)

The way I probably should've worded is that there are probably a lot of different groups of blacks, based on generation and class.

I think there are some groups that still use the word cracker frequently.

But it's similar to how some still use n word to refer to themselves, while other groups want them to stop using it to refer themselves.

I think you're right and thanks for providing the perspective.

My initial reaction is from learning the term that I never even knew that existed and the basis of using that word.

But I didn't really think about how it's probably being used as a derogatory way.

Cracker originated a term created by white people, so it does not have the same power that the n word has.

I agree. All I think of is Chris Rock using it in his routine!

This. Cracker=Chris Rock. Hilarious.

"Beckies" was really kept on the down low as a secret term. Don't let that out.

I think it's funny because their lack of procreative potential is one of the many stupid arguments that have been used as a reason to deny gay people the right to marry. So it's sort of funny to throw it around as a slur.

Slurs are never funny. Two wrongs don't make a right. Plus it discounts the many, many, many straight people in this country, myself included, who have donated and marched and fought to secure equal rights for gays and lesbians in this country. It's just not a good way to channel anger. I prefer to be productive, not destructive.

For me it kinda takes away any sympathy I have for you as an oppressed minority, because it just makes me think you are an ass, i.e. I don't like you as a person, regardless of your race or sexual orientation.

Gay people call straight people "breeders"? Okay, I kind of think that's hilarious.

I do hate the term "hillbilly." I'm not from the mountains so it's not directed at me, but I usually call out people for that.

Breeders is funny. I also heard children referred to as "crotch droppings," which is hilarious!

The term cracker doesn't really hold any historical significance in my mind the way the N word does. So to me (white person), I really do not have a strong emotional reaction to the word.

I've never actually heard anyone use the term outside of Chris Rock and then it was used in a comical way. If someone actually tried to use it as a slur toward me, I wouldn't feel deeply offended, but I would think less of that person for using race as a form of insult.

And PPs getting upset about the term "breeders" need to relax. It's not an insult toward straight people, it's just a joke. My gay friend refers to his sister as a breeder and says he's happy she is one so he gets to be an uncle. I hardly think he's trying to define her solely by her reproductive abilities. Last time I checked, there isn't some horrible history of government discriminating against couples who choose to procreate.

sorry i started not to.

I'm white and I do not get offended by the term, "cracker." But maybe because I am ust about the furthest thing from a "cracker" that there could possibly be! I associate "crackers" with "red-neck" and I'm pretty uptight, conservative, pearl-wearing, etc.
