I'm in IT and your friend is very unusual.

With that said, I never finished my degree either. The thing about technology is that it really cannot be taught in school. You either get it or you don't, I feel bad for kids dreaming of riches sitting in computer sciences classes right now, when what they really should be doing is trying to figure out how to crack code.  When we interview people we are never impressed at what school one attended or what level of graduate degree one has.  By the time the technology makes it into a text book, it is obselete.

The brightest engineer I know never stepped foot in a college classroom.  In the world of cybersecurity he is legendary. The guy is mindfuck smart.
