Brilliant. |
Attitude of repression? You do know that many (most?) of the people mockign you are white, right? My kids are so white, they're almost clear. They'll be fine. Of course, they don't have the disadvantages your kids have, which helps. |
Parent of a white child here, I'm actually getting her ready for a playdate. I didn't realize I should be getting her ready for life as a minority. Crap, I'm already behind. Are there "minority 101" classes I should take? Thanks OP for letting me know, such a big help! |
Socio economics and education are the great barriers to quality of life and achievement. Whites have a clear advantage here (unfortunately). I want my DD to be globally aware, interested and well versed in other cultures and bilingual (Spanish, preferrably). But I don't worry about her living life as a minority in the same sense of AA or Latinos. As a white person, my daughter is not going to face the same kinds of repression, racism, and disadvantages - she just isn't - even most of the people around her are people of color. Not saying that's a good thing, but it's the reality. White people dominate our society and that's actually becoming MORE pronounced economically and otherwise. |
I'm preparing my white son to be an anti-racist ally and prepared to fight against the apartheid that is inevitably coming on a national level and is already on the horizon in areas where people of color are close to being (or already are) in the majority. I am strategizing about how to position him to retain his privilege in a stratified society, no. |
OMG. Dying of laughter here! |
I'm just grateful that my child doesn't seem to take note of race. She was pointing out a child to me at school the other day. He was the only African child in a group of 15-20 boys. Her description was "that one in the blue striped shirt. the one with glasses."
I'm not concerned about minority/majority. I'm hopeful that race will be less of an issue when our kids are in their 30s. |
Please . . . love that you're using this thread as a bragfest You are NOT the answer to enlightenment, PP. far from it I'm sure minorities just dig you. |
Like. |
Ok I don't get this. Can someone explain please? |
I didn't get it either until my husband just told me what it meant. Bryce Harper (who is Mormon and doesn't drink) was asked by a reporter in Canada last week if he was going to go get a drink after the Nationals game against the Blue Jays (thus taking advantage of their lower drinking age since he is only 19). This was his response to the reporter. |
While you're cleaning up vomit-poo and complaining to everyone about how busy you are, here's one random section of one random race group out of a dozen just on Capitol Hill: http://capac-chu.house.gov/issue/economic-development Asian Pacific Americans want $10 billion more in government contracting steered their way. Push for promotions in management positions in both the public and private sector. More help from the GAO for minority contracts. More federal technical assistance from the federal government. Not to singe out Asians, but one year Asian owned businesses received 3/4 of all Small Business Administration loans. Why? Because they qualify for minority privileges but frankly don't need the help. Asians overachieve in many areas. Also minority government contracts are legendary because of preferences written into law. This is just one category of several demands that the AAPI group has. And one race group of a dozen just on Capitol Hill. You go ahead and think that your child is overprivileged while these pressure groups rake in billions and position themselves as your child's boss. Too bad there isn't a Minority 101 class but you might opening up your mind and reading more. Wake up. |
Sounds like you're worried that your kids won't be smart enough to compete when they get older. Given the genetic disadvantages foisted on them, I have a difficult time disagreeing with your assessment. Tough situation, PP, I feel for them. |
You're going to be seeing this a lot. You should get used to it. |
Do you win arguments with empty insults? The problem isn't with the merits of white people, it is in spite of them. When you are locked out of working on a police force entirely because of your race, it really doesn't matter how high you score on a test. But there is more to it than just being politically beaten. Look at Thomas Jefferson High School. It is dominated by Asians. Yes, Asians are a smart, accomplished people, but they also have a culture the pushes their children to learn. Maybe the "Tiger Mom" approach isn't appropriate for white Americans, but some thought into how your child can compete might be in order. It's a matter of adapting to a world far different from the one that we grew up in. Being a stick in the mud won't work. |
