If you're white, are you preparing your child for life as a minority?

One thing that struck me about OP's post - as a means for her children to cope with their upcoming minority status, she suggests that she'll encourage them to become active when they see a civil rights violation (presumably because it could happen to them someday). That fact that opposing civil rights violations is just the right thing to do apparently isn't sufficient - there's gotta be some personal benefit. Urk.

Not to nitpick with a crazy OP, but I also think the facts are wrong because she says that whites are not a majority at her kid's age, but then says that "white" includes hispanics. I am pretty sure that the reports saying that whites are no longer a majority are based in significant part on the growth of the hispanic population and that it is only the number of non-hispanic whites that is no longer a majority. In any event, OP you need to chill out and perhaps read a little history on the shifting definitions of race (including the expansion of the definition of white) in the course of American history.

Yes, OP, I am - I put my DD in an all-spanish speaking daycare at 3 months. At 7 months, we are switching to a native spanish speaking nanny. Suffice it to say, 20-30 years from now, if you don't speak spanish, you will be screwed. Particularly in a major city like DC.

Insane. Your kid, anyone's kid, could move from one place to another within the United States or outside of it and instantly become a "majoriy" or "minority" member. You don't prep your kid to mecome a "minority"--you prep them to be a human being who is like and also unlike all other human beings.

If what you're asking is how do you prep your kid to deal with negative stereotypes about his culture or appearance, well, that's sort of another issue. And your kid, my kid, you and everyone else could face that at any time.

I'm hoping you're not embarking on some sort of strange "White Power" trip, here. You know, an "Aryan Race" kind of thing. 'Cuz if you are, whoo, you're into some weird s#it.

I'm a minority, my DH is white. My kids are half Hispanic/ white. My life has been pretty good but there have
been some hurtful/painful times due to people's ignorance and insensitivity. In general, I feel that Whites have a good thing going and due to their historical economic power, will be at the forefront of major political/economic/social power for a long time. That said, as I read this post, I realize that I'm grateful to have been born into this "minority" group. For one, I've experiences life in a way that I would never carry OPs fears and frankly ignorance. If whites just focuse on being respectful, fair, non judgmental, toward minorities...the world would be a better place and the OPs in the world wouldn't have so much to fear. A minority child doesn't dislike whites, however they may end up experiencing such hate, stupidity, ignorance that it causes them to distrust. So prepare your child OP by educating yourself first. Teach yourself, open your heart and mind to others that don't look exactly like you. Realize we are all human beings with the same capacity for good. I want the same things for my kids as you want for yours and I dont want to do to you what you may have done to me.

Anyway I think you missed some things:

You need to train your children so that they can subsist on any available ethnic food. If Ethan can't digest collard greens, he might be eff'd after the food purity laws kick in. For example, today I fed my kids peanut butter and black bean sandwiches, with hot sauce. I also have a buried cache of mayonnaise and the government will have to pry it from my cold, dead hands if they want it. Next week we are going to pull random stuff up from the creek and eat it, in case the asians take over.

Next you have to train them to not flinch when they see a person of color. I know, it's too late for our generation, but mine have worn tinted contacts from birth so that everyone looks a little bit tan. And I make sure to take them to see Black Santa and Black Jesus. Of COURSE I know they are white -- duh -- but I don't want them to lose their faith when the government bans the white ones. Black Jesus is better than no Jesus at all, this is a Christian home.

They must have a deeply ingrained appreciation for the artistic and cultural foundations of the new majority. It's not good enough to dress them in baggy pants and make them listen to hip hop. They need to know their history. Right now they are listening to New Jack Swing while they sleep. I think it's on Bel Biv DeVoe right now. And next week is that Incan Pan Flute music. Honestly, I'm drawing a blank on what to do for the Asians. Who knows that they listen to.

And of course they need to have the same aspirations as the new ruling class, whatever that might be. I teach them to emulate basketball and football players in case AA's rule, and rappers of course. They will also look up to engineers and scientists if the Asians take over. Not sure what to do to prepare them here for Hispanic domination. Do actual hispanics worship Che Guevara, or is that just the hippies? It's so confusing, I mean confusamente!

My children [college] are well aware of the benefits received by those considered minority demographics. Through them I am more aware of preferential treatment. Life would be easier for them if they were a minority.
