Yes, these services are very limited. We should advocate for better services for all the people in our community. |
And you think it’s easy enough that MCPS should throw taxpayer money at the problem to pretend to fix it. The school system needs to focus on education. The data shows that MCPS is struggling with that goal. Our educational outcomes are abysmal. Why are you trying to force MCPS to provide additional welfare support when that is something that needs to be addressed by the County? Advocate for more Medicaid providers if you see that as an issue. |
+1 I agree with you Though I suspect the reason MCPS has taken this type of thing on is because they are legally required to serve these kids (as in enroll them in school) whereas the county can mostly just ignore or arrest them. |
If kids don't have the basics they cannot learn. |
Medicaid pays so low that its not affortable to providers. Yes, these are kids and the more you do now, the better future they have which will cost us less in the long run. |
That's true of a LOT of kids in MCPS that are not getting the services they need. How many kids lack basic literacy skills? I don't mean recently arrived immigrants. I mean kids who were born and grew up here. Can we please teach the kids to read? |

So you're saying we can't have any counselors that serve all students (including immigrants) because we are funding 14 instead of 26 therapeutic counselors specifically for newly arrived EMLs? Do you hear yourself? |
Why aren't these services being provided by the county? MCPS is a school system. We are setting it up to fail if we expect it to provide all wraparound services. What next, are we going to put the aquatic centers under MCPS responsibility because students who can swim are safer? Ride On busses, because students sometimes use them to get to and from school? Let the school system focus on education and let the county provide needed services. If budget is an issue, the county council can create policies to invite business growth. |
Fine. Then advocate for better Medicaid reimbursements to provider. I'm a provider and I know all about Medicaid reimbursements being low. But don't expect MCPS to provide everything. |
But MCPS goal is to provide an EDUCATION. Let MCPS focus on that and allow the County and they myriad of publicly funded non-profits to provide healthcare. |
That is one way to look at it. Another way to look at it is that he is cutting spending in one area (that only benefits certain kids), so that MCPS can use that money for something else that is even more necessary and more aligned with the goal of EDUCATING our kids. |
If you would like people to sign your petition, it would be helpful to provide more information. What are their caseloads? Do they work from home? Do you have data that shows the impact of these employees on the students? Is there data that funding these positions improves outcomes for the students? We know for a fact that smaller class sizes benefits students. Is it possible that these Central Office workers would be able to help more kids if they were actually reassigned to be in classrooms? |
