I am a social worker with the county and know 3 EMO counselors well there who do nothing and take advantage of being “out in the field” traveling in between schools or doing “home visits” but really they are not working and taking advantage of poor supervisory management. None of them are held accountable.

They are selfish and doing a disservice to our students. These funds are better placed elsewhere

Tons of corruption and fraud. Zero oversight.

Base pay for EML was $81,000 last year, probably higher with cost of living increase now…

CPS Social Workers don’t even get that much and are held to much higher standards.

These EML “Counselors” don’t even need to be licensed counselors/therapists, so long as they have a master’s in therapy/psych related field. In contrast to actual therapists/counselors, you need your LMSW, LCSW, LCPC, etc. These EML counselors do not require this and are the ones supposedly helping our most vulnerable population of students in school but have nothing to show for it.

There is not enough money to fund every program that we want. Some things have to be cut. This is a good one to cut

If kids don't have the basics they cannot learn.

But MCPS goal is to provide an EDUCATION. Let MCPS focus on that and allow the County and they myriad of publicly funded non-profits to provide healthcare.

There is not a ton of health care. Call one of these places and try to get an appointment.

That is not MCPS' problem to fix. Take it up with your County Council. Maybe they can implement a higher bag tax to pay for better access to health care for undocumented EML students.

How interesting that you added the word undocumented?

How many of them are undocumented? Of course, that's interesting. And part of the discussion.

It is none of our business if children are documented or not. Services and instruction are available for all children

News Flash: Anything that taxpayers are funding, actually IS our business. No one wants identifying details, but we certainly do have a RIGHT to know what percentage of OUR money is used to support anyone who has no legal status to be here.

Cps workers have much longer hours if they do their jobs, less pay and worse benefits.

You have no idea how this works.

I just heard that this cut isn't happening anymore? Is that true? Those positions were reinstated.

As an ELD (ESOL) teacher, I am glad for this. Some of these counselors were useless, but others were life-savers.

It's just as you find in many workplaces with employee quality.

Our EML counselor would never tell us his day he was assigned to our school. He just showed up randomly. I think it's a valuable service that is needed but for those that don't work, there is no accountability or oversight by their supervisor

Some have received their LCSW-C in their current positions.

I’m in HS and our EML counselor is there every day. Sees students once if not more times a week. Positive changes in behavior and work habits. Massive changes in attendance! The at-risk students who started to see her come to school now. A couple who almost dropped out graduated- that was a miracle. They are absolutely providing a valuable service especially at the HS level where it’s easy to lose kids due to many pull factors.
