If kids don't have the basics they cannot learn.

But MCPS goal is to provide an EDUCATION. Let MCPS focus on that and allow the County and they myriad of publicly funded non-profits to provide healthcare.

There is not a ton of health care. Call one of these places and try to get an appointment.

So why are SLPs, OTs, PTs, School Psychologists, PPWs necessary for education and EML counselors aren’t?

That is not MCPS' problem to fix. Take it up with your County Council. Maybe they can implement a higher bag tax to pay for better access to health care for undocumented EML students.

If you would like people to sign your petition, it would be helpful to provide more information.

What are their caseloads? Do they work from home?

Do you have data that shows the impact of these employees on the students? Is there data that funding these positions improves outcomes for the students?

We know for a fact that smaller class sizes benefits students. Is it possible that these Central Office workers would be able to help more kids if they were actually reassigned to be in classrooms?

They are degreed in counseling, psychology and, social work? Counselors are not teachers?

How interesting that you added the word undocumented?

Exactly. There are plenty of other resources in this county for students to access. This is not something MCPS should be responsible for.

Can you please share with us where, especially without insurance or bad insurance?

Children are eligible for Medicaid. For those who are not eligible for Medicaid, there is MCHP, which also provides benefit for undocumented immigrants.

https://health.maryland.gov/mmcp/chp/pages/home.aspx

There are also several non-profits, that get grant money (from taxpayers) that provide no-cost or low-cost care. Like this one, for example in Silver Spring.

https://www.maryscenter.org/medical/children-and-teens/pediatrics/

And, you think it’s that easy! It’s not and there are not enough Medicaid providers.

And you think it’s easy enough that MCPS should throw taxpayer money at the problem to pretend to fix it.

The school system needs to focus on education. The data shows that MCPS is struggling with that goal. Our educational outcomes are abysmal.

Why are you trying to force MCPS to provide additional welfare support when that is something that needs to be addressed by the County?

Advocate for more Medicaid providers if you see that as an issue.

Medicaid pays so low that its not affortable to providers. Yes, these are kids and the more you do now, the better future they have which will cost us less in the long run.

That's true of a LOT of kids in MCPS that are not getting the services they need. How many kids lack basic literacy skills? I don't mean recently arrived immigrants. I mean kids who were born and grew up here. Can we please teach the kids to read?

One has nothing to do with the other. Talk to Taylor and the BOE

That is exactly what Taylor is trying to address. There needs to be cuts. Taylor can either cut funding for classroom teachers, or cut Central Office positions. I would prefer not to cut classroom teachers, but you are free to advocate for different cuts if you don't like the ones that Taylor is making.

How many of them are undocumented? Of course, that's interesting. And part of the discussion.

Maybe Taylor foresees mcps having less EML students in the future.

MCPS cannot meet the needs of every student. The needs have grown so wide and so much is now expected of the schools.

The school where my children attend already has weekly free food markets, free eyeglasses, free medical care, free dentistry, free counseling, etc... And it's not enough. The kids still need more. Parents are no longer expected to take care of the basic needs for their children- that is now society's burden.

The problem is that most of this is not education and should not need to be provided by MCPS or our teachers. Wraparound services need to step up and MCPS needs to step down. And parents- what is expected of them? Of course it is hard if they chose to come to a new country. But that was a choice they made. The services are available in this county but they need to do their part to get it and stop expecting MCPS to provide everything.

Maybe MCPS should have more counselors that speak the language of the students in the schools. Sounds like a mismatch between the skills of the regular counselors and the needs of the school communities where they serve. Or be willing to use interpretation services. Spanish is not the only language spoken by immigrant families btw.

All of these laid off providers can set up a private practice that accepts Medicaid.

Reasonable suggestion actually.

They are licensed practitioners. This would be a great opportunity to band together and start Medicaid practices in the area, if they want to continue to serve these patients!

No one is setting up medicaid practices because the pay rate is so low.

Please call these "resources" and tell us how easy its to get care and when the next available appointment is.

Exactly. More Medicaid providers would be great.

Good opportunity for the MCPS employees to fill a need once they are no longer working for MCPS. And also a great idea to lobby for increased reimbursements.

Agreed. There is not an unlimited supply of money.

Also, even if you do feel that taxpayers should pay for everything, the school system needs to focus on education. It is unreasonable to expect the school system to provide healthcare. There are other resources.

So do you also support cuts to occupational, physical and speech therapy services in MCPS? These to me seem like healthcare too.

Those services are limited to addressing issues that affect access to the curriculum. They are not comprehensive. MCPS does not offer therapy sessions as part of the IEPs for kids with anxiety.

Ha. Even if it’s in your kid’s IEP, they STILL don’t provide it. My kid has a biweekly session with the school psychologist and they never see him.
