If they are experiencing violence in their neighborhoods they are less likely to succeed at school. A lot of what these counselors do is connect the kids with community resources as well as being a sounding board. Imagine yourself at 11 or 12 coming to a country where you don't speak the language and not knowing where to go for help because you have no food. The counselors are bilingual or trilingual and trained to help these kids. It's not a huge expense for MCPS.

The county has social workers for this purpose

Most don't speak Spanish and they are mostly assigned to school or programs that are dealing with other issues including the teen mental health crisis and special ed . They are overwhelmed too.

That sounds like a problem for the county to solve

Exactly. There are plenty of other resources in this county for students to access. This is not something MCPS should be responsible for.

Can you please share with us where, especially without insurance or bad insurance?

First check out what this it: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/eld/counseling/

EML Therapeutic Services

EML Therapeutic Counselors (ETC) provide counseling services to Emergent Multilingual Learners (EML) in grades Pre-K through 12. Counselors support students from a cross-cultural perspective so they can succeed academically and adjust to a new social and cultural environment while helping them stay meaningfully connected to their culture. The ETCs are a diverse team of professionals who provide counseling services districtwide and are located in schools offering intensive English services.

Thanks. So, basically similar to regular counselors but specifically for Emergent Multilingual Learners.

This county wants to provide everything for everyone. This is a fantastic goal but completely unrealistic. We need to trim expenses- cutting these non essentials makes sense.

Agreed. There is not an unlimited supply of money.

Also, even if you do feel that taxpayers should pay for everything, the school system needs to focus on education. It is unreasonable to expect the school system to provide healthcare. There are other resources.

Children are eligible for Medicaid. For those who are not eligible for Medicaid, there is MCHP, which also provides benefit for undocumented immigrants.

There are also several non-profits, that get grant money (from taxpayers) that provide no-cost or low-cost care. Like this one, for example in Silver Spring.

So do you also support cuts to occupational, physical and speech therapy services in MCPS? These to me seem like healthcare too.

That would be something to discuss. Maybe open another thread to start that discussion. The question is what is MCPS responsible for and what is the County responsible for.

+1

Also a great way to solicit support would be to share information about caseloads, but the fact this hasn't been provided raises questions about whether people are mainly concerned about staying employed.

No, they don’t.

Schools already have social workers

Those services are limited to addressing issues that affect access to the curriculum. They are not comprehensive. MCPS does not offer therapy sessions as part of the IEPs for kids with anxiety.

The Office of Eligibility and Support Services (OESS) serves as the point of entry for federal, State, and County health programs for Montgomery County residents who are uninsured and have limited incomes. The OESS office confirm eligibility for Care for Kids, Prenatal Care, Dental Services and Project Access specialty care clinic referrals.

And, you think it’s that easy! It’s not and there are not enough Medicaid providers.
