Probably triggered by the sight of bezos bending the knee at the inauguration yesterday. He doesn’t have much to do with Amazon though. Most of the big tech bosses were there yesterday sniveling anyway. There’s no escaping it.

I stopped using Amazon a few years ago because of its truly terrible labor practices and because I think it’s bad for the world to have these dominant mega businesses. It wasn’t about Bezos, specifically.

Yes, all of the tech behemoths are bad. I can’t divest from all of them completely, but it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Extricating yourself where you can matters.

Also, as a customer, I found the Amazon experience to be terrible; I don’t miss it at all.

I just downloaded Libby and started trying it. I couldn't find any of the books I wanted to read available!

Libby is great, but the trick is to have more than one library card. You don't have to join the library where you live, and the wait times are often shorter in other jurisdictions.
This link has lists of free non-resident library cards you can get from other states.

Also Maryland, DC and VA have reciprocity, so DC residents can get a Montgomery County library card.

I use Walmart plus. Believe it or not, you can actually buy a great deal of books on their site.

Target with Red Card shipping.

I also don't really buy books much. I mostly use the library and if not I use thrift books and as an absolute last resort I will buy a new book. But its very rare. I read books and unload them. I don't want to keep them.

I would love to cancel my prime. The price just goes up while benefits go down. Every year I say I’m going to do it but forget to cancel my renewal. I rarely if ever watch prime video and never use prime music. I purchase most of the same items at Target. The only time I feel like it works out for me is at the holidays when I’m pressed for time and need last minute gifts. Thanks for the reminder to cancel!

A lot of you assume Costco, Walmart, Target etc aren't also bending the knee.....

I'm more amused than anything else. I had to watch corporate America bend the knee to BLM and Floyd and Biden four years ago and now they're bending the knee to the opposite. At this point I really don't care and will continue using Prime because it's fantastic and love the discounts at Whole Foods and otherwise works great for me and I don't make up grievances because no one else is better.

Good for you. It’s tough to imagine something more gross than using the phrase “bend the knee” in relation to George Floyd.

Don’t listen to this person. They are trying to discourage you from taking action. Americans have largely forgotten how to strike, boycott, and protest. It’s time to wake up. Costco has announced they will continue DEI practices. Earlier in this thread an app was posted that allows you to see where corporations spend your money. Do what you can do and then do a little more! Don’t listen to the other side telling you that you don’t have any power and agency. Your wallet is probably the most powerful weapon you have right now.

For those you abandoning ABE Books, there's Alibris

Another suggestion: think about buying less stuff. Not in a gimmicky Dry January way, but just acquiring less. It may turn out to be not your style, but you might like

Walmart - you can get their subscription for $50 when it goes on sale regularly - normally $100, or you can pay extra for in home which is great and good for other things.

Bezos doesn't run Amazon anymore. He has stock options which is how he earns his money. Amazon provides jobs to many so while you think you are hurting Bezos you are hurting the people who rely on those jobs as income. With that said, their shipping and returns suck now.

He doesn’t just have options, most of his wealth is in Amazon stock. Amazon loses, Bezos loses. Amazon exploits workers and turns a blind eye to slave labor and child labor. As Amazon weakens, we strengthen healthier businesses and non profits. There is plenty of money for a healthy economy. We just have a few hundred people at the tippy top holding us hostage.

Newsflash - every company does the same thing. Amazon employs many, many people, and that's vital.

It's clear you have an agenda and are partisan and righteous. I don't, I'm not partisan and I don't see myself as consumed with righteous zeal, which is why I see the hypocrisy everywhere. Including among those who bent the knee in 2020 in the face of destructive riots that they called civil disobedience and hailed the BLM (which turned out to be a deeply corrupt organization, but what have you). Corporate America everywhere is getting rid of DEI, removing mandates and all that. Do you know why? Because they're tired of the "righteous" people. Singling out Amazon is only hypocrisy. You can do what you want but trying to claim the pathetic mantle of righteousness is still only just that - hypocrisy.

Walmart. I'm all in for Walmart now.

Then whoever is running Amazon shouldn’t have agreed to pay $40 million for Melanie’s documentary. I will not support that grift.
