Alternatives to Prime?

The library has lots of books and audiobooks! I’m listening to one now. I just go to the store and am not buying stuff.

It's clear you have an agenda and are partisan and righteous. I don't, I'm not partisan and I don't see myself as consumed with righteous zeal, which is why I see the hypocrisy everywhere. Including among those who bent the knee in 2020 in the face of destructive riots that they called civil disobedience and hailed the BLM (which turned out to be a deeply corrupt organization, but what have you). Corporate America everywhere is getting rid of DEI, removing mandates and all that. Do you know why? Because they're tired of the "righteous" people. Singling out Amazon is only hypocrisy. You can do what you want but trying to claim the pathetic mantle of righteousness is still only just that - hypocrisy.

No, refusing to give my money to corporations that support the destruction of America and violate human rights is not hypocritical. If you find supporting the destruction of the United States of America and violating human rights is hypocritical to your values, than why don’t you march out of this thread and start one that aligns with what you believe? Everyone has an agenda, lady.

Costco? Talk about the promotion of mass consumerism. And, it’s basically a cult.

Amazon employs a number of my friends and keeps many other people employed. Despite the rosy numbers, jobs are tough to find. I don’t support them being unemployed.

You don't seem to have any concrete, valid criticism of Costco (buying is fine, and liking a store's products and policies does not make someone a cult member), so I'll keep shopping there.

I stopped using Amazon a few years ago because of its truly terrible labor practices and because I think it’s bad for the world to have these dominant mega businesses. It wasn’t about Bezos, specifically.

Yes, all of the tech behemoths are bad. I can’t divest from all of them completely, but it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Extricating yourself where you can matters.

Also, as a customer, I found the Amazon experience to be terrible; I don’t miss it at all.

We do what we can as we can do it. We do not quit because we can’t achieve perfection today. People are in different stages of wanting to reduce consumption and be more aware of/in control of where there money goes. And no one needs your permission.

This is the key point. All of you pointing out that it’s impossible to completely divest of every company doing bad in the world so why bother doing anything are lazy cynics. It’s fine if you want to surrender—that’s your choice. But criticizing others for taking small steps where they can is just telling on yourself.

OP asked for alternatives to Prime. If you aren’t interested in helping with that request, there’s nothing keeping you in this thread.

Thanks for this thread. This is the first time I’ve seriously considered cancelling Prime (it is just so convenient). But I think I’m finally at that point.
