If we defeat Trump, can we get the normal Republican party back please? Which Republicans have stood up to him?

You can’t get the original GOP back without getting rid of the Catholic and Evangelical political block. These are the factions bringing the most hate, stoking culture wars, pushing oppression of women, eradication of LGTB groups. They aren’t operating as religions anymore but as white male supremacy and tyrannical, cruel patriarchy with a heaping side of grifting going on. Talk about wolf in sheep’s clothing or following false prophets.
Look at the evangelicals applauding when Carlson shares his fantasy of beating a 15 year old girl. The religious right is driven by cloaking perverts and setting the agenda for the GOP.

Who wants a tax cuts for the rich, foreign interventionism and a whole lot of losing?

Most GOP politicians have lost their way due to their inability to choose what's right over what might help them advance or maintain their political careers in the short term. Most regular people that have identified as Republicans since long before Trump entered politics aren't awful, hopeless people. They're just misguided people that refuse to acknowledge indisputable evidence that Trump isn't fit for the POTUS office. They'll come back around one day to supporting normal and decent candidates and at that time perhaps they'll find the courage to admit they were wrong about Trump. All it takes is five minutes of reviewing the indisputable evidence of Trump's abandonment of his duties when our country was being attacked to conclude that he isn't fit for office.

It's also fair for Dem voters to question leadership in their party and to demand better than what they've received in return for their loyal support in recent years. They just don't have a problem as significant and puzzling as the Trump problem.

Look at the major donors to the Republican Party. Pro Israel Jewish billionaires. They have contributed 2/3 of the money raise by republicans this cycle.

Democrats were saying this before Trump came along. They said Mitt Romney was extreme and Republicans should have nominated a reasonable Republican like Jon Huntsman. They said the same about McCain over Bush, but when McCain was nominated they weren't voting for him. They went back to supporting him when Trump attacked McCain joking about wanting people who weren't captured.

The media ignored it when McCain joked with them about why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly.(Because the real father is Janet Reno).

I want someone smart, kind and thoughtful to lead the new Republican party. Someone who sounds more like Obama or Buttigieg.

Will that ever happen? Or are we stuck with Homer Simpson types or Trump wannabe con men?

Please God yes!

Trump will need a very large and embarrassing defeat to go away forever. There's still time! Take a friend to the poll and return Trump to obscurity and let's claim our GOP back!

Please crush Trump's ego everyone. He needs to be humbled into retirement so more normal choices can emerge.

yeah I'm calling all my Republican family members in other states who feel despondent and saying "please vote" we can actually end him this one time. everyone needs to vote and talk to everyone we know. this vote is really important. there's a massive "brain drain" of Rs out of Trump's inner circle, nobody wants to be Mike Pence or Mattis and normal people won't work for him.

But they all support Project 2025 and most of Trump’s policies. They don’t support Trump because anyone with functioning eyes and a functioning brain can see that he’s deep in decline and cares for nothing but himself.

That is fine. I would love to go back to having substantive policy debates at the national level.

I doubt that it will happen any time soon. Personally, I say let the Republican party die. Maybe it will be replaced by something better that actually embodies the values that Republicans claim to support (before they proved that they were willing to give them all up in favor of power by supporting Trump and friends). Creative destruction can be a good thing. This would not be the first time in US history that a major party collapsed and a replacement formed.

Defeat Trump first.

Someone sane needs to appeal to the current Trump followers. That’s the only way to “take back” the party.

Country over party. Neither party cares about America. They care about their power. A pox on both their houses.

Just because the Dems have been saying terrible things about every Republican for decades now doesn't mean the party has to live down to their impression.

As a friend said when we all woke up after the Iowa caucuses in 2015, for years the media has been saying this is who Republicans are and I didn't believe them because I didn't know any Republicans like that. But now I'm not so sure.

The only Anti-Trump Republicans are old/retired/no longer in politics. Pretty much everyone else has to show fealty to Trump, or they won't make it past the primaries. As such, even if Trump dies, that faction of the party is not going away. It will instead be led by the likes of Hawley, DeSantis, Vance, MTG, etc. Somewhat smarter, same policies, just not as open about their intent.

So if you're looking for a McCain/Romney type of party, it no longer exists. The hope, IF Trump is defeated again (and that's a big IF), is that there will be a faction that will break off from the hard core MAGA wing, or be willing to challenge them at least, to get things back to center-right. It will have to be a pretty slow process, with plenty of grassroots effort required.

If Trump wins, then everything done to justify the ends is once again validated, and the country will drift further towards autocracy.
