I had been a lifelong Republican, but I've voted Democrat the last 2 presidential elections, since Trump was nominee. And I will vote for Harris this time.
I miss the normal Republican party - not this cult party we have now with a man of zero character and leadership remaking it in his own image. I know every politician spins and deflects to some extent, but Trump's incessant and compulsive lying is next level. His disrespect for the Constitution and America is disqualifying. Which brave Republicans have risked being on Trump's retribution/enemies list to say "don't vote for this man" and that they are not voting for him? I want to remember and celebrate them. The only way to get the normal Republican party back is if we defeat Trump (for the second time) definitively. Who else wants the normal, sane, rational Republican party back? This dystopian alt-right cult version is unrecognizable and disturbing. |
| I do -- and I'm a Democrat. I'd much prefer to have elections between two sane, moral people with somewhat different but still acceptable visions for America. DH, who used to work on the Hill in high-level positions for Republicans, feels the same. He hates Trump with a passion. |
Same. I wouldn't feel that sinking pit in my stomach every time there was a presidential or mid-term election if the Republican party was led by sane person. I like what VP Harris. No one party has a monopoly on good ideas. If a thoughtful conservative has a good idea that will help Americans and the country she will listen to it; she won't protect herself inside a bubble. We need smart, thoughtful leaders who consider all information, analyze it and are open-minded. Donald Trump has surrounded himself with non-thinking sycophants who only optimize for his positive reaction (like vance and loomer). |
Same. Also a Dem. |
| You didn't like the TEA Party either, did you? |
|
Prominent Republicans who have gone on record to stand up to Trump by saying either they won't vote for Trump and/or he's unfit to lead:
1) Mike Pence (trump's vp) 2) Mitt Romney (former gov and R senator) 3) Dick Cheney (former vp of bush 2 terms) 4) Condeleeza Rice (former Sec of State) 5) William Cohen (R senator, congress and Sec of Defense) 6) Susan Collins (R senator) 7) Lisa Murkowski (R senator) |
Christie, Hogan, the Cheneys, the Bushs and a host of other normal Republicans. Basically, the higher IQ group. |
That Republican party is long gone. Gingrich and his Contract with America ruined the party. |
also liz cheney, and many republican generals who served under trump (mcmaster, mattis, milley, kelly). george w bush has repeatedly refused to endorse trump and also skipped the RNC. |

I think if Trump loses this year and if he doesn't die in the next 4 years that he will run again.
Or that he will be succeeded by DeSantis or similar and not by one of the anti-Trump Republicans. The problem is in the electorate. Trump's maga supporters won't switch to a Romney-esque republican. And there are a lot of them and they are fervent and politically active. I don't know what the solution is. I anticipate that it may take decades to evolve past this specific problem in US politics and that it may take significant upheaval to do it. |
I like this about Harris too. |
Agree with you on all of this |
Trump has said he won't run again in 4 years if he loses. Who knows if that is true but he has been saying that. How do we reclaim this party? What needs to happen? I don't think Haley was an effective enough person to retake the party, and DeSantis was a flop and has sold his soul to Trump and the alt-right a few too many times to be credible either. Who is actually smart and charismatic enough to rise up and lead away from the cult? |
Short version: you miss the old days of the 70’s , when republicans held 100 seats on congress and knew their place, and would lose with dignity and then go golfing with Ted or Tip. Yeah, no. Not interested in that. |
| This is a BIG if, OP. Why don't we save this thread until after the election? I don't even want to think about this right now. It's like counting your chickens... |
